Default M6 to A4 tranny swap is done...

...and the car runs like a raped ape. I'm temporarily using a TCI Super Streetfighter 3500 stall convertor (same as Colonel's), and with my 3.70 gears, the car should be good from a stop or from a roll. With the built 4L60E (9-disc clutch packs, shift kit, & all the goodies), my tranny problems should be behind me now too.

Big thanks to Billy C for pointing me in the right direction & convincing me that it could be done; John at Speartech for doing the wiring harness, finding an A4 PCM file that would work, & explaining everything well enough that I got all the wiring right on the first try (yes, the TCC lockup WAS the purple wire, BTW); and to the guys at Extreme Performance in Bloomington, Indiana for taking the time to do the swap RIGHT.

The only hiccups, if anybody wants to know, were the tranny dipstick tube (I guess it took the other guys over an hour just to get that installed ), the tranny crossmember (apparently LT1 A4 crossmembers don't work... who knew? ) and a blown fuse (Valentine 1 + A4 power source into the same IGN slot in the fuse box = transmission no worky & V1 no worky either). Some of the things that I had thought would be a real PITA, such as the shifter mounting plate to cover the M6 shifter hole and the removal & installation of the pedal assembly, turned out to be relatively easy (or at least the guys at Extreme made it seem that way). And the wiring was a piece of cake, with the Speartech harness. The man knows his color coordination!

Looking forward to some good runs this spring.

My T-56 had been rebuilt four times in 28,000 miles, and was in need of a 5th rebuild when I decided to get rid of it. (Shifter kept popping out of 3rd, and getting STUCK in fourth.) I never powershifted the car after the third rebuild. There are quite a few people having these same problems with the T-56 in their LS1 cars... Look further down the page for the topic "01' and 02' M6 f body owners with trani problems inside."

I won't try to talk you out of swapping... There are lots of people who are NOT having problems with their 6-speeds too, but after 4 rebuilds, and after being told privately by a reputable tranny rebuilder on THIS site that he couldn't guarantee that the tranny would be reliable at 400 RHWP even with steel shift forks & cryo'd synchros, I just decided to go with a "built" 4L60E. I loved my 6-speed when it worked, but out of 15 months of owning the car, it's been in the shop at least three months total.

Am doing same swap, did you need an entire wiring harness or a partial one added onto your existing one.
Ed Wright will program my shift points, and OD only lockup for the highway.
Am very anxious to try this myself after running 8 years[2400+ runs]with the T56.

Timelord: It was just a partial wiring harness, somthing like 10-15 wires. These wires plug into several of the unused pins on the red & blue PCM connectors, and replace a couple of the existing pins. The other end plugs into the A4 tranny itself, with one extra wire that goes to 12vDC+. The wiring was really the easiest part of the whole job, no joke.

This makes me think....hmmm....may be I shouldn't do an m6 conversion. I thought all you m6 people loved the fun factor. What's happening here...a while back, many were changing from an a4 to an M6 and now it's reversed

M6 is a lot more fun, have run mine since I got it in 94,just want to stop worrying about clutch and nail my 60 ft times down into the 1.50s.
Will keep the M6 for reswap later.
If you don't VERY SERIOUSLY race,do the swap!!!

A lot of people these days seem to be going over to an auto setup, when I first got my car I never expected to be drag racing and wanting to go fast, the mods get addicting, my 6-speed took a dump after 9,500 miles, Now I have a TH400 in, and I have 15,100 miles on the car...

Yeah I heard there's a converter that pulls just as hard as an m6 from a roll and is great from a stop. They didn't specify but I'm thinking one with a low STR to keep the efficiency higher. It just really sucks because I feel like shifting often but at the same time, I don't want to have those M6 problems. I'm kind of afraid that after I do the swap, an automatic with a converter will rape me and I'll want to switch back

Would you say it pulls just as hard with the converter as it did with the m6 ?

Punching it on the highway from 60-70 up to about 100, it feels stronger. Part of that may be because there's no delay in downshifting from 6th to 3rd to get the car into its powerband (a real problem in my M6, especially with its synchro problems). Now I just floor it & hang on. I have a few friends with bolt-on M6 LS1's... I may see if one of them will go from a roll next to me this weekend, just to see how I do with the convertor. I definitely think that the car will still hold its own.

When I started shopping for a camaro oer a year ago, I was looking for an M6 car but none could be located. I am sure glad a dealer convinced me to give the A4 car a test drive, I haven't looked back since!

Killer01ss,
I was wondering why you said that you were temperarily running the TCI SSF. Are you unhappy with it or just looking for a little looser converter.
Take Care,
Kevin
