Default Help! Calling out to the 700R4 pros!

My winter beater truck is having some tranny issues. Its 92 full size chevy with a 700R4. Last summer the trans went out so I had a friend who worked for a local dealership rebuild it for me on the side. Two days after the trans was finished he had a major stroke and is unable to work. Well I went ahead and installed the trans and had had this issue ever since. In the morning truck shifts just fine. The truck will warm up and TC will lock up just fine. Problem is, after it warms up it always starts out in 2nd while in OD, ALWAYS!. The other problem is it then will lock up the TC too soon and truck boggs down in 3rd and 4th. If I get on the gas it will kick down fine, just its getting old fast. Now if I put the shifter into drive it starts out in first just fine and everything is all good, but of course no OD. What do you guys think it is. I have adjusted the TV cable when I installed. I hate to call and ask my buddy because I know he's sick and I don't want to bother him with this issue.. Thanks guys!

Unplug the electrical connector at the side of the transmission and see how it reacts.

Give that a shot and get back to us.

That will disable lock up for the time being, I do not anticipate it solving any upshift issues. But, it will definately tell us if there are any issues with L/U coming in too early.

Heres what I found out by unplugging the pigtail. Like said before, no TC lock-up. Truck still starts out in 2nd when warm. So do you guys think its a sticky govenor or just replace it? I know where the govenor is, and I have the skills on everything automotive, except auto trans so I'll need some info on the R&R.

I would not replace the Governor without first determining which weights and springs are installed in it. There are several different combinations to choose from and unless you are capable of disassembling it and getting it back together it is not a good idea.

Being as this is a fresh build it is possible that a piece of debris has lodged itself inside the valve and caused it to stick.

However, if you were to remove it you could easily determine if it were sticking. If it is then clean it well after determining the nature of the problem. Make sure there is not a lot of excessive debris in it. Rinse it off well with an aerosol brake cleaner, lubricate it liberally then reinstall it.

Nope. The governor is the governor.

The most typical symptom when it fails or is sticking is high gear starts. Specifically, what are you looking for?

I been looking into a new govenor online through many parts stores and nothing is listed under a "Govenor". I'm going to inspect the old one first and I'm ok with taking it apart and putting it back together just looking into a new one also. Thanks

Replacing the governor is like replacing a distributor because you have a bad cap or rotor. There are reasons they make those rebunildable and customizeable. They have to be.

If you find that your Governor is flat worn out and must be replaced, use the springs and weights on the existing unit in the replacement unit.

I only suggested changing the gov because it would be a quick test , I know the calibration will be off but if you just want one to try I will send you one. Most times since we do not require a core if our customers have this type of issue which is rare they still have there originall unit to test with.

how is the best way to find the appropriate springs and weights? my buddy is having a problem with his not shifting right. we have changed the weights and springs so many times we are sick of it. some say a simple spring swap is for fine tuning but we have found that a simple spring swap can change the full throttle shift points like 2000 rpms. we don't care if it is a few hundred rpms off but we can't get it close. if we get it close for one shift, the next will be a ways off. for example, we can set it so we are ok with the 1-2 shift, but then the 3-4 shift may be way high or low.....pain in the *** if you ask me.

If you are having that much trouble with the Governor it may be time to start looking at the shift valve springs.
