Default It's a safety thing.

The whole reason for the reverse manual vb idea is to shift away from neutral. Bad things can happen if you neutral a trans at high rates of speed {drag racing}.

its manual shifting & instead of shifting forward which is a bitch while going fast you are shifting it towards (backwards) you while accelerating ,it is just more of a natural feel to it that way & i like it alot more than shifting forward while going fast.its just easier to pull back to shift than to push forward to shift & the missing neutral is a big benefit in the heat of the moment..........

It takes a little getting used too but it does have a more natural feel while shifting under WOT.

Huh?

With a RMVB the pattern is PRN123 instead of PRN321. A ratcheting shifter does not care which gear you select.

Hope that help.

Tell you what, I'll post some pics and a little demo for you tomorrow. We are installing a B&M Pro Ratchet in a car and it is on the bench right now. That should help to take some of the mystery out of it for you.

I'll try to do that tomorrow, if not then def. Monday.

RMVB's were originally designed before the ratchet shifter to prevent hitting reverse with a column shifter. It's pretty much impossible to hit reverse with todays shifters.
And yes back in 1989 I used to street race my friends FMVB with column shifter in his 79 four door malibu classic family sedan looking POS with a tunnel ram, two 390 holleys, and a mopar 8 3/4 rear. I hit neutral a few times, it was a pain in the ***.

Mine was a column shift 1972 Short Wide Cheyenne with a big block and a 400! I know all about finding neutral when it counts the most!

Um, they're the ****. That's all.

You lose 1st and 2nd engine braking with most rmvb's, but it's not a big deal. They're fun as hell to drag race with or just cruise around.
