Well, my first thought is that it has lost the 3/4 clutches.

But, what is the fluid condition?

What was done to the car at the other shop?

I changed the fluid today but when I drained the old it smelt burnt and was dark purple in color, i had cam, springs and pushrods done by the shop, if its the 3-4 clutch how do I remedy that?

Well I am afraid that indeed if the fluid was dark and burnt then the 3/4 clutches are burnt. The 3/4 clutches are a clutch pack that is applied in 3rd gear and 4th gear.

It is not unusual to see this happen on a car with any miles on it that has just undergone an engine mod or two that increases the power output.

The only way to replace them is to completely disassemble the transmission.

That is what shops like mine specialize in. I would be happy to walk you through the process of determining the best course of action.

How likely is it to replace that within one weekend?

Uhhhh... as in removing the transmission, disassembling it and rebuilding it yourself?

Not likely if you have to ask.

However, if we are talking about swapping the entire assembly out for a well built unit that can handle your new found power... no sweat.

Last Friday morning we had a customer drive up from Austin in his GTO. We removed his transmission as soon as he rolled in and had it built to our Stage 2 level and also installed one of our 3200 stall converters by Saturday noon. Point is... with the right shop, the right people and the right plan anything is possible!

I'm sure Gilbert can get you hooked up with the parts that you need. We do have the parts required for a proper build listed on our web page. Click the link in my signature to get some ideas. In some cases it is better to have a professional do the rebuild for you like myself or Gilbert's builder John. I have seen do it youselfer guy's wind up spending more in the long run. Just a thought and good luck to you with what ever way you choose to go. Vince

I would have to agree its the 3/4 clutch and though I dont know your mechnical ability as was mentioned unless you have alotta time or are very expereinced with the 4l60e and attempt at a repair of the trans is a risky thing at best. I just helped a guy in europe dothis repair long distance however we spread it over several weeks. But that was a unique situation. I would suggest also that you consider just getting a replacement, Then you could do a quick swap of the trans in one weekend, I too have seen more than a few guys try and repair there trans who were not experience spend more money and time in them than they would have simply getting one. But we each have our own situations and you must do what you must do. If theres anything I can do for you dont hesitant to contact me.

If you would like to discuss some options feel free to give me a call.

We like to get to know about the Short Term and Long Term goals of our customers before settling on a build.

I would talk to these guys about a new trans. The 3-4 clutch sets on these trans. are bastards...

The guys at Performabuilt are awesome, as well as their transmission but all of these guys have great stuff

Well there everything in my sig, but i rcently added a texas speed 228r cam, prc springs and retainers, for up to 660 lift, manly pushrods, and richmond 3.73, the only other things that will be done to my car is a set of heads.and I also have a tci 3000 stall sitting in the corner of my room that I will put on sometime. and as of right now this is my dd.

Ok, that helps. So you do have plans to upgrade the engine in the future. Sounds like you are on your way to owning a very nice car!

I would recommend building for the future and doing it once. Most guys we sell to purchase our Stage 2 unit. We have several guys running our Stage 2 behind Stroker combinations and N2O with terrific success.

No doubt it would handle what you are running now and in the future. We do not build "cookie cutter" units here. We build custom units for the application. We do not have an assembly line of guys building an input assembly at one station and a pump at another and final assembly at another... you get the idea.

I am sure we could help you to take your car to the next level. If you would like to give me a shout I would be happy to get you into the correct unit for your car.
