Looks to me like that hub got red hot! The pump will no doubt be affected.

$4k and no help from the vendors that sold those components? Have you contacted them?

That transmission will need to be inspected very carefully. Who did the install and when? It wouldn't surprise me to learn that it has had a noise or has had some sort of a problem from day one. From those pics I would have to say that the converter was not spaced properly.

That, or maybe the converter wasn't installed correctly.

its very difficult to say why it happened, I have seen it happen and there still be a perfect pump. I have seen them crack there and cause a leak . The pump it self would not be able to cause enough strain to cause that so I would say either installation error that showed up late or a weak hub in the converter. Should be easier to make better guesses once pump is inspected

Pumps don't arbitrarily lock up. It could happen... but you would be surprised to learn how infrequently it happens.

It is my opinion that the excessive heat was generated by a converter clutch that failed, by another clutch element that failed. Point is, I think it will be found that the cooler is clogged and the unit lost lubrication.

For that converter hub to be 10 different colors it had to be red hot at one point. That is not good.

A few years ago I ran into a few 10 vane pump rotors that were an aftermarket brand of some kind . We had several in a row that would split for no apparant reason . They would lock the pump when they split and we saw a few converter hubs that looked like that .
