Default i NEED your guys' opinion.. have a chance to swap t56->th400

right now ive got my t56.. stock 3.42 gears (stock 10 bolt), im running a 232/234 112, ls6 heads, 90/90, 150 shot, true duals etc..
Ive come accross a deal that i can swap for a built th400, built converter, shifter.. basically everything for a swap.

Now i've talked to my local f-body guy, and he says i wont really like it and it wont be too much fun driving.. especially on the high way.
I just DONT want to be changing clutches every year..

heres what comes with the th400:
TH400 conversion...rebuilt tranny, reworked Yank 10" converter, Yank Crossmember with T/A mount, Chromoly driveshaft, B&M Pro Ratchet shifter, TCI flywheel, Tranny cooler, dipstick

PLEASE help me guys, i really need some peoples opinions.. this isnt a drag car, its not a daily driver just a weekend warrior, and eventually its getting a larger cam

I am not a fan of the t56 just because of the hydraulic clutch and the high cost to repair them or build them to handle power. The th400 with a good stall will make your car more consistant, its about the same weight as the t56, and its alot cheaper to repair or build.

A stalled car to me is just as fun to drive as a manual, but it is all personal preference.

of course, ive driven the a stock 2000 z28 with the stock a4... obviously wont compair to the th400..

but it would be so NICE to not have to worry about missing gears, and what not! this is going to be a hard choice! do you drive your th400 on the street? high way? see you have 4.11s i'd be running 3.42s

thanks for your input! i appreciate it!

Yes, I drive it on the street. You won't need a different harness. You will have to get the correct sensor for your speedo to work, or I also read that you can tap into the abs sensor(it might be a different sensor)and recalibrate the computer to read off it.

I may get flamed for this, but everyone is going to tell you to go with a reverse manual valve body, but IMHO they are not meant for street use. I feel like if you want to shift gears stick with the t56.

also, in the future i'd be able to install a trans brake correct?

Yeah, you can always go back and add a tbrake. I think they are pretty much all reverse manual valve bodies, but if you are gonna use the tbrake I say go for it.

reverse manual valve body means your have to manually shift it into each gear then correct?

Yeah, and that is where I think most guys go wrong. They want to down shift at high speeds so they can roll race, and I just think that is too hard on a transmission no matter how well built.

or you could leave it in 3rd gear at whatever speed your going and "put put" away

now what about the converter? would it work ok with nitrous?? its a 3400ish converter..

from the seller:
"This converter is completely new guts, and the flywheel, Yank Crossmember, and BMR shifter"

Depends on how big of a shot. You will spray through a high stall that isn't set up for nitrous. When I say spray through I mean it will slip and lose efficiency. You can probably get away with 100hp maybe even a 150hp shot with that one if it is built well.

slipping, almost like a slipping clutch? im hoping this thing will hold the power of a 150 shot... he had a turbo, 400+ ci build for this tranny.

Yup, kinda like a slipping clutch. If he was running that then you will probably fine.

Plus you shift away from P R N.
Which is kind of nice.

New pattern would be PRN123

I have to chime in on this too. I just swapped from a T56 to a very well built Th350 and LOVE it. It is so much better to drive around since I was dealing with a Spec 3 clutch and a spool. I hardly even notice the spool now. You should be very happy, even on the highway, with the 3.42 gears but let me warn you now, you won't have great 60 ft times with such a numerically low gear. I thought I would have to chance mine to a lower numbered gear when I did my swap but I still trip the lights at my shift point in third with my 4.56 gears and 28" tall tires.

Good luck and enjoy the auto.

Do you wanna go fast....or play around and shift slow? Thats the real question.

I love my RMVB TH350.

its great . my th400 is loud though.

i just kinda need to learn how to drive it. You really need to wind out each gear to get going huh? i messed around with an M3 last night, and i wasnt anything near WOT but by the time i was near 5k in 3rd gear i was only going like 90 or something...

Also, how do you guys go about down shifting. I know its not like a manual at all, but im jus curious if some deuche on the high way wants to race me, can i drop it in to second or what?
