Default A4 Tranny filter and fluid change ?

It's time to change the filter and fluid in my A4 tranny. I bought the GM filter kit,how many quarts of tranny fluid do I use with a stock pan? TIA,

Each time I've changed mine, 5 qts brings it right to the mark on the stick (warm). One thing to be aware of: the gasket around the filter neck tends to stick up in the valve body. If this proves to be the case for you, try getting an awl or such and -very- carefully work it between the gasket and the metal and pry the gasket inward, then you can reach up with some needlenose pliers and pull it right out if it doesn't drop out on ist's own.

Thanks GWJ,

I think I read another post where you said it was a real PITA to get the seal out so I decided to leave the old one in.

I know I have made a post in the past where I said it was a real PITA to get that seal out!

In fact GWJ responded to one of my "Help me" posts with some good info. My seal was basically stuck and would not come out. After breaking a pick tool trying to pry it out, I figured I had already damaged the existing seal enough that I had to get it out. Per GWJ's advice, I ended up
using an awl to "very carefully" pry the seal away from the housing enough to grab it with some needle nose pliers and pull it out.

I had read some earlier posts how it "may" stick a little, etc. - Well there is no "may stick" - it might as well have been welded in...

I changed mine around 12,000 miles. I cut open the old filter and found a few small metal flakes, but nothing that would clog the filter. I think changing the fluid at reasonable intervals especially if you race / beat on it is a good idea, but I don't think changing the filter everytime you change fluid is an absolute necessity. Just my opinion.

Good luck. My prediction is that you will be cursing up a storm with transmission fluid dripping in your face when you attempt to replace the seal. It can be done - I did eventually get it replaced..., but I can only describe the process as a royal PITA!

ok i just did my fluid and filter change yesterday. and BEFORE YOU POOR ANYTHING IN.

Measure how much drained out first. you dont put 5 qts in if only 3 qts drained out.

IE what happend to me yesterday. all the posts tghe gm manual and techline said 5 qts for a change. and thats what oreily even gave me. yea its not cool having trans fluid shot back at you lol.
for so long we though it was air pockets. but turned out when i dropped my pain their was only about 3 qts in the pan itself. and my fluid wasnt low.

i always pour a few qts in...start the car for just a sec. cutoff and pour some more. otherwise you may get the big tranny "burp" that covers your floor
