Default 3.73 w/3400stall or 3.42 w/4000stall

Alright guys, I am about to get another car to play with. Its an A4 and it will be a daily driver/strip. My question is: would it be better to go with 3.73gears and a lower stall or 3.42 with a higher stall? I have a 237 cam for it with heads already that are waiting to get put in.

I am looking for a combination of good/descent gas milage with good track E.T.'s. I know its a broad question and there are a million different ways to go about it, just looking for ideas.

Id do the 3.42 with a 4k if your limited to those two. But I don't think the converter will make a big difference in MPG as the gears, you have a lock up in the converter.

There wont be much of a MPG difference between the combo.... But, im sure the 3:42 combo would draw less rpms on the hwy though. In town, both combos will suck.

I have 3:89's / 4K stall and I just cant keep my foot out of it. But, I did not put money into it to make it haul some *** then worry about MPG either.

So, I would do the 3:73's / 4K stall combo. And, get some new tires on order cause your gonna need them. :-)

3600 stall, how high must you rev it up before you move from a dead stop? Im talking about just regular DD. Like when you leave a stop sign.

I have 3.73's and a vig 3600 stall.. Its a sick setup and great for a DD imo.. here is a vid of mine with some normal driving just keeping up with traffic. My car rolls forward just by letting off the brake and normal traffic usually revs to around 2200-2600 rpm to keep up with traffic.

I used to have a 3200 stall and taking off wasnt that much diffrent than stock and i was used to it in no time. It got to the point i was bored with pretty quick. I swapped it out for the 4000 i have now and it isnt too much diffrent than my 3200 i think.

Thanks for that post!

So how does a 3800 stall with 3.42 gears sound as a DD and an occasional strip car? Im trying not to hit the high RPM's on highway driving, but still want descent low end power!

if it's a DD, i would suggest a 3200 stall and keep the 3.23's. if it has 2.73's, go with 3.42's. I DD a 3.42 auto car with a 3600 stall, sometimes i wish i would have gone a little smaller in both categories when it comes to dailying it. when it comes to racing, i wish i would have gone bigger of course.
