Default 700r4 lock up question

my buddy is installing a 700r4 from an astro van into his firebird. The motor is a 350 from a suburban. Our problem is making it lock and unlock without a computer.

The plan is to use a brake switch and vacume switch to give a rudementry way of controlling the lock up.

Advice is needed and I will update with the directions we are using later.

Thanks.

http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/lockup.htm

This is what we are going on, we have most of it done but are unsure on exactly what we have, its not like the pictures (which are a 2004r)

we have what appears to be two pressure switches, one with one pin, and one with 2 pins. I know its vague at best but I'm not sitting in front of the trans now. I should be able to answer a direct question about the situation though. Thanks again.

I've used the "Painless" kit and it works well. It uses both the vacuum switch and the brake switch. Very easy install and works well. Vince

Ok, i have more details. I wired it up best i could today, and looking back I feel like its not going to work.

(example photo not the trans i am working on

I have the ground wire from the selenoid going to the far left switch, which is p/n GM #8627332. The middle thing is unused and the far right (temp switch?) is wired with the positive selenoid wire, and a wire with 12+v from out side the trans.

I have no idea if its going to work.

the rest of the wiring will be as follows

keyed 12+v
vacume switch (n/c?)
brake switch (n/c?)
trans

its a hodge podge of parts and I'm not sure if its going to work at all but its all pretty much free so we have our fingers crossed.

help, does the lock up selinoid need 12 volts to activate or a break from 12 volts to lock up?

12 volts is what it requires. With the way you have it wired it will only lockup in 4th gear which is fine. Do you have the blue and black wire tied together? If so it should work. Vince

hmm photo bucket is down. but I'll try and explain as best i can. the ground wire for the selonoid is running to the pressure switch on the left. i have power comming into the trans and into the temp switch then out and to the selonoid.

sorry. is that correct. thanks vince, i really appriciate the help here.

with out pictures this is how it goes

12v-->brake switch-->vacuum switch-->temp switch-->selonoid...

ground from the selonoid is going to the pressure switch on the left.

in my head it seems like it will work.

EDIT: red is power blue is ground this is how its wired. ignore any black wires.

any thoughts on this? we got the motor started and the trans is whats holding up back from taking the car off the jack stands. we arnt sure if our wiring will work.

thanks again guys, its real exciting hearing it run. we only have long tube headers on it now.

on a side note is it easy or hard to put the trans into an 84 firebird and bolt it up? i think its gonna be a pain.

Default yes

I have my 57 done this way....

the pressure should be a open/closed switch, closed during 4th gear when pressure applied to the switch......which in turn gives you a ground to the Torque converter lock up switch.

On the other side of the torque converter lock up switch, you keep a 12v ignition feed to it all the time.

4th gear, it locks up.

I didn't use a vacume switch, so I'm not sure about that. My 57 goes from unlocked 3rd to locked 4th.
