what do you mean by a kit? autometer sells gauges and it comes with the sending unit which you can screw into the trans. all you have to do is buy some wiring from autozone. very simple electrical.

1 power and 1 ground for the light
1 power and 1 ground for the gauge itself
then one wire from the gauge to the sending unit

Remove trans pan, drill hole, install sensor in side of pan using oil proof loctite

Run wiring from there to A-pillar gauge. There are other ways, but sticking it right in the pan gives an accurate reading of oil temp.

there is also a place on the driver side of the transmission if your lazy. its located a few inches above the shift linkage. its the pressure port. there is a plug that screws in a stock trans. take that out and the sending unit will fit perfectly. temps will read about 10-15* higher then what they really are.

Yep. Everyone sees that port and many find it too tempting not to use. As you mentioned though, if you want accurate readings, that is not the place to put the sensor. Lazy man's way is correct.

All the locations will vary slightly, no more then 10-15 degrees. You want to read the highest temp possible, just like the coolant temp. It is placed right by the combustion chamber to read the highest temp, not in the radiator to read the lowest or average temp. The best source would be at the exit of the pump, but it is not doable. The pressure port is fine, as well as all others. The only place I suggest not to install it in would be inline of the cooler return hose. That is the coolest reading you will get. I like knowing what is the hottest temp. To each there own.

Not at the bottom. Here's a pic of mine attached.
This will get you accurate temp readings within reason.

The ideal temp range for a trans is between 160 and 220, beyond that range the shift quality can be altered, possibly resulting in damage to internal parts.

Here's a link to a chart that might help.

Most automatic transmissions fail due to a breakdown of the transmission fluid (oil) caused by overheating.
Change your fluid regularly

Had my temp gauge plugged in here on my 4l65E and my readings were a bit LOWER than they should have been. My temp gauge starts at 140 degrees, and cruising down the highway in fairly cool weather the temperature won't even register. Just slowly driving around in traffic on a hot day my gauge might read 170 or so at the hottest. So yeah, that test port, at least in my experience was not a good location at all. While I have my trans out for the Performabuilt swap I'm definitely having a small bung welded into the side of the trans pan.

I have mine on the trans cooler feed line. Cruising down the highway at a constant speed itll stay in the low 130s to mid 120s. Driving around town itll go up and down between 150-190. Also have a big B&M cooler with a fan that comes on at 175.
Yank 3600, 224 cam.
