lockup converters tranny reliability
ive wanted to but i keep hearing in the 60-e that the drum breaks ect ect...is there anyone that makes 600+ with a lockup converter and kept their tranny alive without issues for say 100 passes or more
also what about an 80-e i thought about doing one of those with a lockup converter they are supposed to be more durable anyone with those?
o yeah and i see no point to lockup a converter at the top of 3rd myself besides to get more mph...but ive seen back to back comparisons of people locking them at th top of first compared to unlocked and its a huge differance...you get the bst of both worlds launches like an auto and pulls like a stick......
i wanna lock mine top of first or maybe the top of second through the rest of the run
but im worried about the shifts with it locked damaging that trans...i dont know anyone that has lasted lockup up through shifts...???

If you lockup the converter through the shifts your gonna break something with the 60e and very likely any other auto. The stress is many times what a manual trans would ever see in that instance because a manual you have to push the clutch or in cases where you can get everything just right and make the shift without the clutch the ratios on those units are very close. the autos ratios are not close at all. The impact of being locked during a shift would be enormous with any auto.
Not in the case of lockup converter verse a non lockup converter and the lockup used normally. There s no advantage to running a non lockup converter as far as trans life.

Locking the converter at the top of first with sticky slicks and high line pressure is gonna break either the input shaft or housing almost every time. If you want it to last lock it up at the top of third and you will gain a couple mph. A 4L80 is hands down stronger than a 60, but its not just a bolt in deal. A 4L60 built right can handle 700hp, myn in a 4700lb truck holds just fine.
