Default Stock 4L80E stronger than built 4L60E?

I've heard from a not so reliable source that a stock 4L80E (maybe with a shift kit) is stronger than a built 4L60E? Is that true? I'm making 740 RWHP and the race weight is about 3600 lbs, and I know the 4L60E is on the edge at this level.

Stock for Stock, Yes. But a built 4L60E can handle 800rwhp and the stock 4L80E might do 400rwhp? Hope that helps some.

There are guys on here running junk yard pull out 4l80e's with 80,000 miles on them running 700-800 rwhp all day long with no problems. All they do is put a good stall in, and roll. I would run a used stock 4l80e anyday over a built 4l60e. Just my $ .02

youve got to think the 4l80e comes in 7k+ pound vehicles w/ towing capabilities of well over 15k in some applications

so figure a 3500ish lb car and no towwing. i would say you can beat them to death in anything 800hp and under i would think.

Yeah id probably take a stock 4l80e over a built 4l60e either way I could always have the 4l80e built and it will take huge power.

I kept blowing up stock and built 4L60e's. I got a $100 4l80e that looked like it ran on used 15w40, put a Vigilante in, FMVB, and it stood strong.

4L80 is a TH400 w/ overdrive. They're pretty strong. Is anyone making a FMVB that actually works w/o any glitches?

I'll let you guys know. I am going to be running Rossler's FMVB "plug in" and soon after his Transbrake. I already have a Transgo Stage 3 FMVB kit in use now. I might even give the Trinity one a try. I'll let you guys know in the next few months.

The 4L80E in stock form is pretty heavy, considering it takes around 7.5 quarts of fluid and the STOCK converter weighs around 90-100lbs. My 4L80E with the ears cut off and a PY3400 converter weighed probably 30-40lbs AT MOST more than my 4L60E with similiar 3000 midwest converter.

My 4l80e is being built right now with a transgo shift kit and clutches. Thats all the this tranny needs for under a 1000hp.

The pan alone takes 7-8 quarts. The 80e takes about 14qts after a rebuild.

The 4l80e is rated to handle 440lb/ft of torque in an 8,000lb vehicle in stock form. There is no doubt in my mind that a 4l80e stock is stronger than a fully built 4l60e. You can polish a turd all you want, but in the end it's still a turd. The 4l60e is simply an inferiorly designed trans for the purpose of high power or weight applications (i.e. it was made to go behind a 200hp v6). That being said, when you are considering a 3,500 lb or less vehicle, a well built 4l60e is obviously viable as has been proven by some of the high powered vehicle running sponsor's transmissions here. Regarding half ton trucks though, it's a tragedy GM ever used the 4l60e in those vehicles, which is why I will be swapping right over to the 80 myself. I am not aware of what all is involved or how difficult the swap is into an F-body, but for the cost one can obtain a complete low mile 4l80e for, the swap is a no brainer in my opinion over a $2500 60e. Wet the 4l80e w/converter weighs 255lbs. In comparison the 4l60e is about 195lbs fully wet.
