Default LS5 Engine

Saw this article and thought it was pretty interesting. GM plans to bring a new motor to the LS series. A 5.5L small block also known as the LS5.

"Recently, GM announced plans to release a 5.5-liter version of its LS series of engines. Already dubbed the LS5 (not to be confused by the LS-5 454 big block of the early ‘70s), it will be the first of the new Generation 5 small-block engine family that will be featured in everything from the sixth-generation Camaro to full-size pickup trucks. Stemming from General Motors’ Corvette Racing program, the new engine is not only aimed at increased performance, but will also provide increased fuel economy and more than likely, lower emissions."

Interesting, read about it a while ago.....I figured the whole LSX series was done and they would have a new series with the new generation. Still great to see new motors in the work.

I'm interested to see smaller displacement, higher revving LS engines from GM. And +1 on the DZ302 recreation.

Sweet. Looking forward to what GM will do with a slightly smaller motor.

So: LS1, LS2, LS3, LS4, LS5, LS6, LS7 and LS9. The only option left is an LS8! Maybe the LS8 will be a performance variant of the LS5?

Just keep it going. I'll be waiting on the LS69 that comes OEM with twin turbos, a maggie, and a 150 shot.

I said somewhat of the same thing in a related thread. Then someone pointed out the RPO codes are only 3 characters long.

Blah. I'd rather have a larger displacement engine that makes unholy amounts of torque and power at rpms within the range of the current LS3 motor. Smaller displacement does not excite me at all. I'd like to see the "LS5" introduced with a 6.5L displacement.

I remember that thread. The "someone" was me.

I would like to see half block done of any of the LS motors to have bad *** 4 bangers for the eco boxes. I know when I forgot to plug in the driver side bank coil packs, my 408 still had some serious nuts.

That is too cool. If the 5.5L makes 10-20hp over the current 6.2L, I wonder how well the larger displacement versions of it will do for their "Z06" and similar performance models?

LTX and LSX are already used up. LRX would follow i guess. 5.5 DI LR1 makes sense, not LS5. I doubt they will call it LS5.

agreed^^

also, i wonder if they'll swap this motor in the mid model camaro ss around 2012 or 13 to spice up the performance war with the 5.0.

Cool

Pretty cool motor but I was REALLY hoping for a Direct Injection version of the current LS3/6.2L before the downsizing took place.

LS10? How bout an LS based V10? That would definitely be fun. I couldn't see it in any corvette or Camaro, but how 'bout a new sleek super car maybe based on the corvette with a nice LS10 with options and styling GM has never had, kinda like the Lexus LFA. Maybe by the time i graduate school GM will be ready to show off its financial strength ( i graduate as a car designer in 2014 heehee).
