Default New Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 392 HEMI Hits the 'Ring

And the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8's 'Ring time is...

By John Neff
Posted Apr 2nd 2012 10:15AM

The Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR currently holds the unofficial production car record for a Nürburgring lap with a time of 7:12.13. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S is the first four-door to show up on the list of lap times with a 7:52.00. The Audi RS6 Avant is the quickest wagon with a time of 8:09.00, and the first thing resembling a sport utility vehicle is the BMW X6 M at 8:24.00. That right there would be the target for a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 were someone to bring one to Germany for a 'Ring run. Last September, somebody did.

Piloted by the eminently qualified Sabine Schmitz, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 did the deed in 8:49.00. Ouch. That's 25 seconds behind the X6 M and slower than even the front-wheel-drive Chevrolet HHR SS (8:43.52). Still, you can't be taken seriously as a performance machine these days until you pay tribute at the Green Hell. And watching something attempt a high-speed 'Ring run that was originally designed to rock crawl is always fun. Click the logo to watch the official lap vid from SRT.

I like how they compare it to a BMW X6 M as if the X6 is an SUV also. Common sense tells you, if you want to go fast in the twisties, don't buy an SUV.

1997 Chevrolet Corvette ran the ring in 8:40.

To be fair that was the automatic. I think it would come down a few notches with a 6 speed.

The SRT8 Grand Cherokee is an auto too.

The time seems slow when compared to high performance sedans and coupes, but it's really not THAT terrible for a mid-sized SUV.

Well I had a 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland with the 5.7 Hemi and loved it. The interior is awesome on these SUVs. I would imagine the SRT version will be even better.

What a big bloated turd. I'll never understand these pigs of a sports car. There is zero utility left in them. I would rather have a S6 Avant or CTS-V Wagon.

It's really not a bad SUV for the money. $55k for an SUV you can put 5 people in, tow a boat to the lake for the day, come home, unhitch and go run low 13's at the track with 0-60mph times around 4.6 seconds for those redlight encounters on the street.

X6M is on another level. 555HP, sick trans. and QMVH diff, and dynamic suspension/swaybars. Jeep aint even close.

Why they brought it to the ring is beyond me. That truck is still a bad *** daily! Wasn't a huge fan of it when I first saw pictures. But now it makes the old SRT8 Jeep look extremely dated.

LOL @ SUV being a turd around the corners.

The X6M is essentially a crossover if I'm not mistaken, and the HHR is on a car frame as well. The jeep is a jeep, that's pretty damn quick for a jeep around a racetrack.

Quit being dummies.

It's built on the same chassis as the X5. Only difference is the rear diff. BMW calls them SAVs. But the X5M offers the same level of performance. They roll out pretty hard for what they are

It's a JEEP, not a Viper... I don't care if it needs 10 minutes to lap the ring. That's seriously not what it was built to do, but it does handle well for what it is.

Sarcasm noted, but that "girl" operates the "Ring Taxi" and has probably logged more laps around Nurburgring than anyone. I'd put money down that she can drive better than anyone on this forum.

Maybe on the ring itself, where most members here have never been, but overall, not likely. Keep in mind, there are many members here who have been to driving schools, racing schools, etc. and have logged many hours on tracks she's never been to either.
