Default Hennessey CTS-V breaks 220mph on Texas Highway

The day before the SH130 toll road (the one with a 85mph speed limit) opened, Hennessey decided to test out their CTS-V and the DOT's new high speed cameras. The cameras were easily able to capture the license plate when the Caddy passed under the toll bridge. Not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if 220.5 is a record for highest speed on a American public highway.

Pretty sure there are a lot of guys at the TX2K events running over 220 on the street too.

Also-

The fastest speeding ticket in the world allegedly occurred in May 2003 in Texas. It was supposedly 242 mph (389 km/h) in a 75 mph (121 km/h) zone. The car was a Swedish-built Koenigsegg CC8S, which was involved in the San Francisco to Miami Gumball 3000 Rally.

6th is overdrive. It's not good to put a lot of load on the engine and trans (aka full throttle) while in overdrive. 5th has always been the top speed gear in the tremec/gm transmissions from F-bodies to Corvettes to even the CTSV.

Also, I call on the speed cameras catching him at those speeds without proof. My guess is the Texas DOT and state police that allowed and helped out with this made them say that as part of the deal. Until I see the pics,

Gen 2 CTS-Vs and ZL1s have a ZR1-like 6-speed, 6th gear is a usable gear, not a super overdrive like on most of the T56/TR6060 transmissions GM has used. I'm confused about how this was hitting 220 in 5th though, I think that gear is only good for about 180 with the stock CTS-V limiter. Also, 5th and 6th gear are both overdrive gears in EVERY T56/TR6060 GM has.

Nice, but I really wish tuners like Hennessey would take their sedans to the salt flats or a testing facility.

The G-Power BMW M5 goes 232mph with 800hp and the new Brabus 800e went 231mph with 788hp.

Heck, way back in 06 brabus went 227mph with a 720hp CLS (brabus rocket).

I have no doubt this car could reach those speeds with enough room, it would be nice if they went out and did it though.

Could have changed the rear gearset.

That's my thought. If this thing was setup for a top speed run, I'm willing to bet they did a gear change in the rear and removed the stock CTS-V limiter.

What I didn't get is why they would run taller gears and make 6th a useless gear, I don't think 220 would have been a problem with the stock 6th gear.

5th is probably a stonger gear, and with 1000+hp on tap the softer gear probably doesn't hurt keeping things under control.

The real question is how many cut up customer cars were used to produce this thing.

Fastest I know of on record is the Ultimate Aero SSC that clocked over 26x mph to break the Bugatti's record of few years ago. I think Bugatti has since reclaimed that crown with their supersport but on american roads I would think that the Aero SSC might be close to the fastest.

I can't imagine driver's like around here having a road with an 85 MPH speed limit, the majority of them will kill themselves or other people.

It's bad enough around here with a 55 MPH speed limit although majority of everyone is 65-75 MPH.
