Dodge Ram 1500 EcoDiesel
Chrysler announced today that the Ram 1500 will offer a light-duty diesel engine when it goes into production this fall. Using the same turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 recently introduced in the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Ram 1500 is expected to get even better fuel economy than the current 2013 model's best-in-class 25 miles per gallon on the highway.
Power output has not been released for the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, but in the Grand Cherokee, this engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, and it will be paired with Chrysler's eight-speed automatic transmission. This has definitely been a busy and exciting year for the Ram division, bringing home major awards such as the 2013 North American Truck of the Year, 2013 Motor Trend Truck of the Year and 2013 Truck of Texas not to mention the recent announcement that the Ram HD models will offer a best-in-class towing capacity of 30,000 pounds – all of which is pointed out in the press release.

Why the **** has this taken so long? You get better than big V8 torque (same torque numbers as the current big V8s, but low end torque>>>>high end torque all the current V8s have), and WAY better gas mileage! I'm probably wrong, but I'm think Ford's Ecoboost engine is the top seller right now, and that's the closet a 1/2-ton truck has come to having a turbo diesel option. V8s have long gone the way of the dinosaur in the 3/4 and 1-ton market, no reason at all they should have taken this long putting them into the 1/2 tons.

That said, bonus points go to Dodge as their 3.0 V6 TD is already in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, so it is a proven power plant. Chrysler/Dodge will have the 1/2 ton market cornered for at least the next couple years with this setup. I'm very interested.

Dodge getting there first is a big deal, but if GM (or anyone else) gets to the market cheaper with a turbo diesel, it is anyone's game.
That said, bonus points go to Dodge as their 3.0 V6 TD is already in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, so it is a proven power plant. Chrysler/Dodge will have the 1/2 ton market cornered for at least the next couple years with this setup. I'm very interested.

Because they totally shut down their R&D department, and haven't come out with a single new thing since then? All of the big three have been scared to sell a diesel 1/2-ton in the US. That's almost all they sell in the 3/4 and 1-ton market, so I have no idea why they waited so long.

dont worry gm will come out with something in 6 yrs that has the same hp and tw and make it seem like they invented the wheel .
They are constantly late , the srt 4 neon 03 -05 then the cobalt ss comes out a yr later . **** like this happnes all the time . They are the apple of the car world. Lets be late and then make great marketing and it will all be awesome.

They are SLOW with putting anything in thought into production. Perfect example is the Camaro, seen it for how long and it took how long to throw it out there? Challenger for example seemed like it was a year process, we saw it and within the year you could buy it.
Than another issue they have is they give just crap for the first 1 maybe 2 years than release some upgraded version. If they jumped into this market, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they threw out a diesel without a turbo, than two years later "a new and improved version with a turbo" comes along.

Agreed with GM being responsive and slow. What happened to GM, they used to lead the way in new designs and tech, now they just copy and paste. Good for Dodge, this is going to change the truck market forever. I would buy this before any gas 1/2 ton.

What sucks is that GM had diesels in there trucks before everyone else at one time and were the only ones to put diesels in there 1/2 tons from 78-81(shitty 5.7 Diesel) then the 6.2 diesel 82-93, and finally the 6.5 Turbo 92-00.
My old 6.2 Diesel '82 GMC got 23 MPG constantly and I loved that thing. I think there is still a huge market for a 1/2 ton diesel.

When I tow 10-15,000 pounds with my duramax I can run 60-65 MPH in 6th gear around 5-9 PSI.
