These unions seem to only be putting themselves out of work because of the uncompromisable contracts they impose. These companies will go out of business and then these people are all going to be out of jobs. It sure would be hard to take a cut in benefits, but I'm sure those people will still be doing pretty good.

On another note, a large local company just fired their entire union staff.

As GM should, UAW is going be the downfall of US Automakers. Those guys bring a pretty good salary, wouldn't kill them to pay a little to save alot for the company.

I'm surprised to see the UAW even considering healthcare concessions. Like they said, that's unprecendented. I've never been in a union, but I believe in them. I also believe they have to deal with reality, and it's not 1955 anymore. I think voluntary concessions would go a long way toward healing management/UAW relations at GM, which cause a LOT of problems.

Yep. Also, if you open up the labor competition it might make these guys work a little bit better, quality goes up, costs go down, and I'm sure the pay and bennefits wouldn't change that much. That's where the Jap cars are kicking rear, because they actually 1) treat their employees decently and 2) they actually get them to produce for a fair pay. Not saying to this extreme maybe, but things have got to change as there are pleanty of labor laws that would protect these workers.

I've never been a fan of unions at all. In theory they are very good, but all I've personally seen them do is allow drug addicts, lazy people, stupid people, and otherwise unqualified for their position types to keep their jobs. I'm sure this doesn't apply to every union worker out there, just to the few instances where I worked under the union "umbrella" . I know there's a few union workers in this section so don't take offense at my comments please. I'm just referring to my own, very limited experiences only

The UAW has been a lead weight tied to the leg of American industry for many years. It's time for a big change. Either that or American car companies are going out of business. It's really as simple as that.

You mean 1905. There was a time when a union was absolutely necessary. Times have changed over the years. What unions fail to realize is their own party (Democrats) have done more to harm the unions than the Republicans ever will. Every labor law that is designed to help the worker was founded by a Democrat. The Republicans just allow it and never stand in the way.

Organizations like OSHA create rules to keep workplaces safe and friendly. Legislation like FMLA, worker comp, etc. take care of the benefits the union says they are responsible for. Unions aren't needed anymore. The only place a union works is in Maxism. Capitalism can't support socialist, trickle up ecomonic ideals.
