I would guess they are saying they use their own engines because some vehicles out there do not.
Example: My 96' Ford Ranger had a Mitsubishi engine I beleive. In which case it was not a Ford engine that was giving me the quality but Mitsubishi.

GM has used Getrag(I think), ZF, Borg Warner, Tremec, New Process, etc. for drivetrain in the past. Geo's were basically a combination of Asian parts. The ZR-1(LT-5) engine was desiged by Lotus and manufactured by Mercury and had a ZF 6 speed mated to it. BMW for at least a period was using GM Hydromatics. Isuzu has been using the GM 60* V6 for a while now.
I guess the badge on the outside of the car means that company made the floor mats.

There's a '54 Vette that frequents the Central Indiana car show scene that's powered by a Ford V8. Does that count?

Yeah, this was good marketing money spent! No wonder we never saw many Camaro/Firebird ads - brilliant campaigns like this make more sense!!
And they wonder why no one is buying their ****! Who cares what's under the hood! I mean, remember all that BS when they had the "corporate" V8 under the hoods of GMs?. No more "real" Pontiac engines, Olds engines, etc.
I wish they would get their act together. I'm seriously looking at that silly Shelby GT500 or even the Charger SRT-8. Can't understand them.

BTW, that engine (3800 SFI) is older than dirt. Perfect GM advertisement.... "Chevy Revolution", "Pontiac Excitement", "Not your father's Oldsmobile", "new new new..." Yeah, welcome to 1985...Did you hear David Lee Roth left Van Halen?
GM's is starting to become an airline...old equipment, outdated business model, bad management.

Thanks for the correction 'DMNSPD', I was not certain which but guessed it was Mitsubishi.
