Default Pontiac Unveils 2007 Solstice GXP

http://www.autoblog.com/2006/01/01/p...-solstice-gxp/

Yes yes, Mallet has stolen some of Pontiacs thunder by unveiling their own Mallet Solstice V8 complete with a 400hp LS2, but it's pretty much guaranteed to cost quite a bit more than the factory offering. Perhaps one day GM will do their own Solstice V8, but until then a 260hp turbo Ecotec with direct injection will have to do. I'm kind of pissed because there were rumors that this thing would get a 6 speed manual, but according to Autoblog it will be available with either a 5 speed manual or 5 speed automatic just like the base Solstice. Perhaps in a year or two, there will be a proper 6 speed option.

In any case, it may not have a V8, but an 83hp improvement over the base car is nothing to sneeze at. I just hope the motor isn't a harsh and unwelcome piece. If you ask me, it's about damn time they drop this motor into the Cobalt SS. Dump the 205hp supercharged motor in favor of this sucker, and give the Cobalt SS an LSD. Too bad the SRT-4 isn't around anymore. If GM put the Solstice GXP motor under the hood of the Cobalt, it would have made for a nice domestic pocket rocket comparo.

Wonder how easy it would be to get 300hp+ out of it.. I'd be interested in one if it was cheap enough.. I wouldn't pay more than like 25k-26k though.

Peace,
Josh

I'd take a turbo over a V8 any day, but you probably new that already by my screen name and sig.

If this little Ecotec is tunable like the classic Buick turbo V6 we may see the second coming of GM turbocharged dominance on the streets and strip.

I'm not sure if this makes a difference....but the Solstice is RWD. Maybe this turbo won't fit properly or there isn't a sufficiently strong enough tranny for a FWD application at this time.......just posting some possibilities.

Also, big advantage that the Solstice has over the SRT4 (other than it being in production) is that it's RWD. It should hook nicely!

Ecotecs are an easy build up. Many parts out there for them.

I wonder how much power the bottomend could hold. I imagine the crank could handle anything you could throw at it, and the pistons/rods would be strong as well. Anybody know what the strongest stock ecotec block has held? It may not be that big of a difference from a mildly modded ecotec to a stock ls2..

Peace,
Josh

My mom's 06 was just under 25K so I would guess this one would be a bit more. She did get all but two options though.

Read any of the blog's replies... they are ignorant as hell.

"made by stupid american engineers..."

We're (engineers) are so stupid, we only won 2 World Wars with our engineering, so f*ck off. Do you want cars from people who can't even defend their country? Being a rising American engineer, this pisses me off.

You may want to fix that so that you're not supporting the guy's theory. Just kidding.

Actually the best engineers in both world wars were the Germans. We simply out produced them. The WWII situation of how the Deutsche had superior equipment makes one wonder about the whole quality v. quantity argument our mil runs off of.

In one of my mags i just got in the other day (Autoweek or GM High Tech) they had an article on this Solstice GXP with the same pics and stuff. But, they also said that there's rumors about Chevy getting hold of the frame the Solstice and Saturn Sky use and being the only division to offer it with a V6. The article made it seem pretty economically feasible for GM to do using existing parts lines and such.

Disagree.

The Deuche had some awesome weapons, but we did too back in the day. Our fighters were far superior to thiers (P-51 Mustang anyone?) Our bombers could hold more bombs longer distances. The M1 Garand was a rifle superior to the semi-auto rifles Germany had at the time. The Tommy gun had more stopping power and higher rates of fire than equivelent German MP40's. Our surface ships were far superior (save the Bismark and Prinz Eugen [sp] ). Now the one thing the Germans beat us on (hardcore) were tanks. Our tanks were never ment to enter tank vs. tank battle. The Sherman was just a infantry support unit pressed into engagements it was never ment to fight.

well, on topic:

I hope the Solstice GXP saves Pontiac and is a hit with the 4 banger crowd. If chevy screws up the new Camaro (which they wont) then I would be happy to own the Solstice GXP.

Sounds like a cool little car. Ecotecs are known to be pretty tough with forged parts.

The Ecotec drag car produced over 1000 HP but it had under 100 at 2000RPM.
The drag car had a virtually stock block. All they did was sleeve it! The stock finger follower valve train is good for something like 9K RPM.

CHECK OUT THE VERY BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE:
http://www.year2032.com/ecotec.htm
It shows u how much each stock part can take.
