Honestly you won't make more than $25/hr. My pops has been doing heavyline for years. I used to work at chevy as a lightduty tech. in 2000, i was making $12/ flat rate.
Go to Mercedes or Audi if you wanna make dough.

5 years mechanics will need 4 year degrees to just get a damn job. technolgy is progressing faster then even the engineers can uderstand how it works let alone how to fix it.

Damm some of you guys make some bank. In stexas a good paying mechanic job is 12 an hour or so. Definitely why I left my dads shop and went back to college.

I'll chime in here.

I've been working at for GM dealerships for 10 years and at "another" domestic brand dealer for another 6 year prior. I currently have a GM master tech cert in Electronics and I am making $23 on commision but only pulled down $27k last year. From what I've seen (IMO) dealer techs are 'pushed' to put out as many hours as possible. Unfortunalty this creates the problem and the perception of Dealership 'butchers' instead of techs. I've seen more tech's reprimanded for being slow than for being butchers or for cutting corners. For those techs like myself, who are thorough in their work and therefore take more time to do the job right, get left behind. Given the fast growing complexity of the new electrical systems in the cars coming out it's not to easy to keep up as stated eariler and it takes time. For those techs out there all I have to mention is the 2007 GMC Denali's and Caddy Escalades...

I've also noticed of all the dealerships I've worked for, regardless of brands is that generally every shop has a favorite 'boy' that gets fed the gravy work and can generally crank out 60+ flag hours per week. It doesn't really matter too much on how much you make per flag hour, it how many hours you can put out unless the difference is like $15 vs $20 per flag hour. You could be making $30+ per flag hour but if your only getting 3 flag hours per day you ain't making much money.

Sorry for the rant I have issues-

started, at 17$ hour in 99'
ended at $25 in 03', sometimes less than 40 hrs. which hurt
not going back to dealerships, anymore. worked at toyota dlr.
in houston, imagine gm pays less, ase certified, toyota training, etc.
not worth it to me, anymore,
make more now doing less at new line of work.
