I had Car Toys install a 12" Alpine Type R and a 600.1 JBL amp with adjustable bass **** up front. Its perfect, it really makes the system sound way better.
They used a GM converter to tap into the Bose system. It sounds great and there are no issues.

I have a similar setup to whisler, Apltine type R single 10" with an alpine 500 watt amp mounted in the same spot. Also used a line out converter off the Bose amp. The bose amp does kick the base down at higher bvolumes though so im going to look into an adjustable **** or an aftermarket head unit which would be the better choice since ours sucks besides the info screens.

that is what is sounded like to me. I have looked around for one as well and everything I have found/read says you have to get a 10" and trim the opening. I have not found a 8" free air sub to do a direct swap with. It also seems from my reading/research that the stock amp sucks and you will get much better sound out of the stock sub by just putting in a good amp.

Its nice to be able to have the amp cranked up when you want but also have it way down if you need it to be.

You can really use any sub "free air" as long as its low power, a low enough excursion woofer, and use low power. Its very hard to control a woofer mounted in infinite baffle, but you have to make sure you have the front and back of the woofer completely seperated. If you don't you'll get oddball fluttering and weird sounds.
If you're gonna go infinite baffle, be 100 percent sure you know what bass and distortion sound like, if not you're gonna hose the woofer for sure.
The reason I'm doing the w10gti setup is because the woofer has two 6 ohm coils, wired in paralell, gives me 12 ohm load, which the stock amp better be able to handle.
