Default Radar Mount

So I was tired of the suction cups and my radar falling every once and a while so I decided to fix the problem. I have a Escort Passport 8500. I bought a visor clip for $6 on eBay and used some double sided automotive tape. I had to bend the visor clip to my desired angle and used the tape to mount it to the windshield. Pictures show exactly what I did. You can't even see it outside.

I had to adjust the mount and I it was super hard to get off once mounted. I tried to wedge it also but the visor clip I had was too short and was blocking the sensor for rear radar on top. It also "bounced" around and it didn't feel secure. But Good luck!!!

Maybe if the officer is using Laser, even then at least you know they're around. I hear this argument all the time but my experience speaks differently. I can't count the number of times I have been saved by my radar spotting a cop waiting around a corner or over a hill. Worth every penny!

^ Wrong they work beautifully, that's only for laser majority of the time.

A "ghetto fabulous Blendmount" NICE!!! It looks very good not homemade at all, props. I couldn't have mine that high b/c of my eyebrow so I wonder if it'd look as good lower. Hmmm...

Ya thats a lot better than a $50 country joy/blendmount for how good it actually looks. Where'd you buy the double sided tape and did you have to trim it?

It's just the standard 3m double sided 1/2 inch tape. Injust put 2 strips side by side and trimmed off the excess.

As a matter of fact I do have a radar.

I'm really glad that I read this post yesterday. I wrote a $150 citation last night to a guy who had his detector mounted in the same place as the OP. I may have overlooked it had it not been for this thread.

Install looks clean from the pics though. Good work!

Actually, I think kueblerkt is as sold by the marketing hype of the radar manufacturers as we are sold on the hype by the radar DETECTOR manufacturers. Just read the website he linked. It's "no matter which direction they're traveling, you can lock their speed!".

It's a game of cat & mouse.

Very true laygo, the only real winners are the manufacturers on both sides.

Well im glad you posted I've never been lucky enough to have a dick cop give me a ticket for having a radar, usually the speeding ticket + joy of catching perp along with the satisfaction of personally telling me that radars don't work is enough for them. I will never ever leave my radar detector just chilling on windshield now, thx.

I haven't/wouldn't ever give anyone a ticket for having a detector. I admit, they might be slightly useful if you are in the middle of traffic, but if its one on one, by the time your detector goes off, your speed is already locked in. Plus, from my experience with detectors that friends have, they give too many false readings and would be more of an annoyance than anything. Maybe the technology has improved though.

Radar has its flaws too. If you are driving by a train or large vehicle (Semi, RV) it is very unlikely that your speed will be picked up as the larger vehicle is much more reflective to the radar. Both options have there advantages and disadvantages, and as stated earlier its a game of cat and mouse.

Anyway, I'm not on this board to troll, and as stated earlier, the OPs install does look clean.

Cheers

Yeah, the larger the object the more the radar will have a tendency to 'focus' on that object and if you're off from 0 degrees (straight on), the speed will not be accurate, but the good thing is it'll be in the driver's favor (say you're at a 15 degree angle, the speed may show as 42 even though you're travelling at 47 <---arbitrary #'s btw; I forgot the specifics)...Plus, everytime the radar gun is turned on again, you're supposed to place a tuning fork in front of it, to calibrate the unit...(I used to do radar speed surveys for the City years ago )...Finally, in order to be enforced, you have to be clocked over the 85% percentile of that road (based on radar surveys by city engineering dept.). Except if you're going over maximum speed limit (usually 55 exc hwys posted higher), it probably won't matter as much, as you're exceeding the max. Of course, there are other considerations, such as traffic, weather conditions, etc.

To rely on a radar detector is asking for trouble...I have one, but it's more for fun and I do like knowing where an officer is using a radar gun, but it does not give you much warning at all...That is X band (most commonly used)...Laser, once it goes off, you're done for (there is no warning hardly from one bar to 5 bars; it's that fast) Unlike X band radar that travels in waves and you can pick up strays from up ahead (or behind), the laser is concentrated and if it's aimed on you (for the detector to go off), it's pretty much too late and really your only hope at that point is to put on the brakes as fast as you can without arousing suspicion or doing something stupid...

One more thing about radar guns...they can "hear" your engine too as a hum (least the older units; I have not used one since '95), so can tell if you're getting on it, slowing down, etc. However, they can only put down what is registered on the gun, but they are also experienced, so they may pull you over anyway and hassle you if you're being stupid. There are also the typ that is mounted on the police car and is on all the time (afaik), that show two readings; one for how fast his car is going and the other is how fast the other vehicle(s) [you] are going. There needs to be training and experience for the officer to distinguish who is doing what and to be able to enforce it.

If you're going to speeding more than 10 mph over and/or just driving irresponsibly, on the freeway (where they generally can't or not allowed to use radar) I'd be more concerned with the CHP, as they are sneaky and will watch you from a distance and you'll never know it.

Hopefully that tape will hold up with the heat and being applied to those black 'dots'...I take it you cleaned the surface with alcohol first? Otherwise, like the location; does it have a clear view from the back, too? I ended up just putting mine on the dash with velco, right left to the front center speaker and seems to work good there...Again though, it's a novelty and not much more.

Thanks for saying it looks clean.

I'm kind of confused though. U said you wouldn't give a ticket but earlier you said you gave one last night?

Oh well. Hope someone can use this DIY mod.

Thanks everyone fOr the comments.

I would think he wouldn't give you a ticket just because you have a detector (can't actually unless your in VA/DC is it?), but may be more apt to believe you go around speeding because you have that device in the car and you're up to no good in that sense. (not saying you are, but from an officer's pov and not knowing the person, I would think)...I'm not a cop or in law enforcement, btw, but just saying what I would be thinking if I were in their shoes.

I know what your saying. Honestly I just bought it b/c it was super cheap ($75) and it's worth more than that. I don't speed too often but when I do it's not excessive and I like to have the radar. I especially don't speed when my kids are in the car.

I'm in the Air Force and one of core values is INTEGRITY. I was at a conference with one of the Command Chief Master Sergeant of one of the Major Commands and someone asked him what his pet peeve was and he said Airmen with radar detectors. He said if u live by the core value of INTEGRITY then you shouldn't need one. Everyone started to look at each other. LOL

Cheers!!!!!
