Default *BOOM* Goes my rear

Rear took my abuse for almost 30k miles. I beat the hell out of her day in and day out. ***Note, I don't launch her in 1st, just a lot of 1-2 2-3 rip shifts.

Last night cruising 80mph in 6th heard a faint pop, pop. Then a loud grinding. Pulled over on the side of the expressway to check things out. I smelled gear fluid I say to myself, what the hell I rip 1-2 shift and noise goes away lol.

I continue on my trip to AC, get there drink all night have tons of fun.

On the way home the rear is whining like a small beaten child.

Then again 6th gear, cruising around 60mph pop pop again, but now it doesn't go away. When letting off the gas the worst grinding, banging, screeching, and howling. It's strange, I give it gas and noises go away lol.

I limp it to a friends house, he lets me borrow his spare vehicle.

Luckily local salvage yard has a 4th gen diff (258xxxx part number)

Hopefully be back on the road beating the **** outta her in a few days.

Yea, I'm going to try and negotiate the price with them. Found that they are asking $1000.00 for it.

Note: The howling, was deafening. Even with the radio up quiet a bit you could hear it. It was all over the powerband too.

I'm guessing lower 4XX range.

For $1000 that thing better have next to no miles on it.

The rear I found has "unknown mileage". It's from a reputable seller on ebay, and I've dealt with them before but IDK, $1000.00 seems high no? Anyone else have any recommendations?

Broke mine last week. Came out of a corner, power down, then just lost all power to the rear wheels. Housing is intact. No leaks. Driveshaft spins but axles do not.

$1000 is waaaaay too much for a stock diff.

When you stopped and looked underneath (since you smelled gear oil) did it come out of the vent, seals, case cracked??

You may have stripped ur axles. Check those before you go out and buy a new diff. The big pointer for our diff's failing is the casing. And usually in the same exact spit

OP, $1000 is to high for an unknown mileage V Diff. Brand new run about $1500 or $1600. If it was really low miles (less to 15k), I could see $1000. But you could be getting a 100k miles Diff....which if that's the case, its worth about a couple hundred bucks at best.

Well,

I pickup the new diff today. Something inside the rear has got to be bad. I read a few stories with everyone saying the stripped axles (but everyone says they have the noise under acceleration. Mine is quiet under accel, but letting off the gas it's horrible grinding noises)

The diff I am getting I bought for 800. It has about 33k miles on it, and is the 4th gen 258 part number. Comes with axles and all.

***Note, when I checked under the car quickly the other day. There was gear fluid all over the exhaust, the rear bumper. Everywhere. One way or another since the initial noise issue, I put maybe 120 miles on it. Even if it was blowing out the vent tube, that's a long time driven with low fluid, overheating temps, and whatever noise it is. I'll inspect later today to see the damage.
