Default Fuel pump replacment

Was wondering how big of a pain it is to replace the fuel pump on our cars? I am about to convert to E85 and am going to have to go with a bigger pump.

It's not the easiest tank to pull out. You'll have to drop the exhaust, pull the driveshaft, then lower the rear cradle before you can even get at the tank. Once all that stuff is out of the way, no problem. Make sure it is as empty as possilbe. The tank is really awkward because of how tight everything is around it.
I put a Racetronix pump in mine with a 2nd walbro gss342 attached to the 2nd sending unit.

Ditto, that's what I did. Borrow/rent the special tank retainer ring from your local caddy place too, that thing is nearly impossible to get off using other methods with the limited space you will have working thru a hole in the floor.

I meant to say 'rent the special tank retainer ring tool from the local Caddy shop'. It fits on the end of a 1/2" drive break over bar and you bet your *** it's worth having!!

Anybody got any pics of this tool? Better yet, I am sure GM makes a tool for this job. Anyone have the part# ?

EDIT: Nevermind. I found the part# J 45722

No need to use this tool. I have used a brass punch and hammer with success in cases where this tool was required. Yes it was a PITA

I've cut trap doors on two V's. The first, after about an hour, and after a little damage to the ring, we got it off with a punch and hammer. On the second, after an hour and a LOT of damage to the ring, we went to the local Caddy place and they let us borrow the tool. From now on I'm going to use the tool!

For hole location, google "CTS-V Fuel Leak! Fuel Pump Melting & Smoking!!"... there is a thread on another forum with pictures of where to cut the hole.

Any other situation using a hammer and punch works... for some reason these pump rings just suck
