Default What controls fan turn on?

Probably a lame question, but have been unable to find/ determine the answer... Before installing my aftermarket ALRADCO radiator, my car would get pretty hot. I am 99% sure the fans are not working correctly, as they come on at 224-226. They don't come on in low speed earlier like I was told they were supposed to, they just come on at 226. I checked this again by blocking the rad and getting it hot enough where fans will come on, and sure enough they come on at 226 then back off at 218ish. I know a programmer is supposedly able to change fan turn on point to your liking, but isn't the fan supposed to come on like at 210 at low?

If they are supposed to come on then (or close to it, or low/high) what controls that? I imagine the temp sender just reads the temps, and the relay controls turn on, but there seems to only be one relay for high low settings. Could this be the issue?

Sorry if this is a lame question, new to the V, and new to LS motors as well. Thanks in advance!

James

Soooo.... there is only one fan speed, and it comes on at 226 and turns off when it cools to 218ish?

That's it?

You are the man. Thank you very much! So I guess I can assume when my fans come on at 226-228, that is low, and if I ever got to 235 they'd kick on higher, that's what you mean by fan 1 and 2, as in fan settings, not really separate running fans. Good info, thank you.

Actually I'm pretty sure it's separate fans.

What is that based on? That's not what the FSM says, and it doesn't appear to be what my '05 does. With a stock radiator and (AFAIK) stock fan settings I've never seen temps anywhere near that high, even during track sessions. The fact that Squid4life is seeing temps that high in normal driving implies to me that his fans aren't turning on when they should.

Stock bin file off HPTuners website. It's consistent with what my car was doing stock and, obviously, what the OP is seeing.

BTW How do you like the Conti's?

Hmmm... My fans come on as a pair, shut off as a pair. I am not so worried about the temps thanks to the new radiator, but want to confirm all is working correctly in the case I get stuck in traffic in the desert or something...

I thought I saw them turn on one at a time, but I could be wrong.

Mine also gets up to 224 before they come on. What is the cheapest way to change that to 200 or something?

I think the only way to do it is with a handheld tuner, which is what I am considering for this reason, among a few others.

Word of advise. If you use a handheld (or any tuner) make SURE your battery has a good charge. And turn everything off, lights, radio, don't open a door. A lot of things on a Caddi can interrupt a flash.
This happened to me with an older superchips tuner. Car was dead, and the tuner could not recognize the PCM. I had to send out the PCM to get re-flashed.

Thanks for that info. I assumed it was like my SCT tuner on my Excursion; I read the same info somewhere, and was always nervous when I'd swap tunes. I would be nervous the OBD cord would come off, etc. I remember I was changing the tune when my wife walked up to the door and was getting ready to open it, I yelled so loud "NOOOOOOOO!!!!" She was like "WTH?????" Scared the crap out of me, and was probably an overreaction!

I guess I need to start searching on what tuner is best now, and where to get a custom tune...
