04 ctsV questions.
Hey everyone, I just picked up a 04 V with blown motor. And I'm trying to decide what to put in it to get it running again. I'm thinking of a ls3 or maybe even a 5.3 or 6.0. What all would be needed to do the swaps I mentioned.
Thanks in advance guys.

I don't know about the 6.0 but I would just go back with the LS6. What is wrong with the current engine? Rebuild may be your cheapest option unless you have cracked heads or block.
The more I think about it this sounds like a great project, where are you located and are you interested in selling?

But ya everything is for sale. I'm in NM...

The iron cases are missing the rear two motor mount bosses/holes that are seen on the LS2/6/7 cases. Our motors use a longer bracket on the case side of the engine mount.
The front four holes may be adequate as several folks have used the iron 6.0 before. Do a search on member 2c5s. His swap was a 6.0 with L92 heads.
Personally, the extra weight (~125 lbs.) over the front end is not something that I would want.

Id only do iron block if you plan to run a lot of boost. Otherwise i dont see the point in this car. Its not like if you add that extra weight that you can do weight reduction somewhere else cause frankly i dont see where anyone could pull 125lbs off the V without sacrificing creature comforts or dropping a ton of cash on lighter wheels and such.

Cash is king...if the LS6 is blown and someone is looking to get into the game on the cheap, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to throw an iron block 5.3 or 6.0 in there. Besides, how much difference is 150 lbs really going to make in a 2 1/2 ton sedan? I have at least that much weight hanging on the front from the Maggie and the handling or braking has not suffered one bit.
I say get an iron block and save your money for hookers and blow.
Edit: To answer your question OP, yes, you can use an iron block 5.3 or 6.0, it has been done before.

It weighs a little more than you think...the Maggie/intake assembly and two and a half gallons of coolant alone are almost 100 lbs. Add the tank, HEX, magnavolt, tubing, wiring, brackets, pump, hose clamps, etc and you are almost there if not on the nose. I have not weighed it, but I have pulled the crap apart enough times on my own to know its not as light as you think.
Besides, the weight penalty we are talking about here is worth about 10 hp, hardly noticeable in probably 95% of people given how they drive their cars.
Hookers and blow FTW.
