Default Looking at some used V's and need some advice

So I'm beginning my search for a used CTS-V, and have found 2 options, both in the low $20k's:

2005 CTS-V, 40k miles
2007 CTS-V, 65k miles

Both are basically the same price. The '05 is from a Mercedes Dealer, and the '07 is from a generic used car sales place. Both have clean car faxes with one owner. Both are manual, and comparable condition. Which do you think is the better option?

I'd probably get the 07. Check and compare the service histories though.

Look for motor mounts, rear differentials, and anything else that's a "big" service item that's been replaced.

For roughly the same price? Get the 07 no question!! No further debate if you ask me. Odds are it still has some powertrain warranty left on it.

'07 no question. Unless you can use the '07 to get the '05 at a much lower price.

Yep 07. Thicker axles, updated diff, radio controls on steering wheel, broader torque curve with the ls2 versus the ls6, and 100k power train warranty included. LS2 FTW!

Thanks for all the feedback

Are they similar enough that if I testdrive the '05 I would have a good feel for what the '07 feels like? I just ask because the '05 is much closer to me. I recently drove a C6, (which is why I'm looking into these in the first place), so I am curious to see how much of that driving experience translates to the caddy before I make the trek to look at the '07. Thanks!!

If the 05 and 07 have the same condition of motor mounts, trans mount, diff bushing mount, and clutch wear, they should drive the same. Depending on the condition of those parts, they could drive drastically different. I would certainly try to drive both and make your decision then.

Do either of them have the fg2 shock package? If so, you will notice a firmer ride.

When I sold my 07, I had 47k miles on the factory fg2s. They were perfect and handled very well. No leaks. I do remember reading that other owners had failures around the 30k mark but mine were still running strong.

I know this will cause an uproar but motor/trans mounts will probably be the leading cause to it driving poorly as it can affect general vibrations and how well it shifts, startup and shutdown. If the car has a short shifter and those items are bad which is probably common it could also be very hard to shift and give you a negative impression of the car in general. I would get the 07 if the price points are similar based on items mentioned as 25k miles is 1 year driving for me so that seems worth the tradeoff for the updated items. An 05 with upgraded diff and axles would probably level the playing field on a stock 07. FWIW, I upgraded the axles on my 07 and have not increased the power so upgraded axles are preferred for all years.

'07 should still be under a powertrain warranty. Also that is too much (IMO) for a 40k mile '05.

A friend of mine has an '07 C6. It is faster, has more tire, and feels generally edgier. The V feels more like a normal car, except everything is faster than a normal car. Also the driveline and shifter in the C6 feels normal, which is odd since it has a longer linkage and a dual-mass and those rubber donut things at the end of the driveshaft.

Go with the 07 if its in good shape. If you test drive the 05 you will not be able to tell ANY difference between the 05 and 07 driving wise except the 07 has a built in jake brake.

If you were in the MD area, I'd let you drive mine (I have an 07 that is up for sale). Like everyone else says, I'd go with the 07.

just make sure you turn the jake brake off when it rains. Or you wont have a car anymore.
