Why are you guys buying Cobra (Ford Racing) differentials instead of Eaton True-Trac differentials?

If you plan on making more than 500 RWHP, isn't the extra $250 is worth it?

They can handle the power and plus they are quiet (no clunking).

Okay those bushings should definitely go on the list. What would solid mounting the rear diff do I wonder?

dont know if its been mentioned or not, but the ford explorers have 31spline diffs and can be picked up for cheap at the junk yard (assuming you found an early IRS 8.8 that was 28spline but wanted 31 spline axles).

It was as small testimonial to show what others are doing, no need for a pissing contest. lol

Absolutely! Just looking for a broken, still intact housing, that I can use to make a jig to build new brackets around.

I have a few lines on a 8.8 cradle locally, so this should be really easy to replicate.

Not trying to start a pissing contest. I am just saying why go through the hassle of sourcing all the parts, having the put it together, and in the end still pay more in time and money? Unless you like that kind of thing. Your world bro. Just sayin

i see where hes coming from but he is spending more money than its worth.. my 8.8 build cost around 450 plus the partial kit.. thats an old thunderbird iron housing $100.. explorer carrier $50, $35 carbon discs from a cobra.. powdercoating free for me, bearings and seals $100, gears $70 3.55's front ploy mounts $25..

im building and setting it up so it wont break or whine. to me thats priceless. seems like everytime i break something and rebuild it..that part is good but something else always breaks or goes bad :-(

I wonder if it possible to get the rear axles out of the Exploder and have the end resplined to fit the Cadillac outer joint? I will call Moser and see if they can do it.

In the pic of the mounting bracket above someone added a lot of extra bracing. I wonder at what point it would actually be needed? It looks strong as hell though.

EDIT: I called Moser and it is $75 per axle to respline the end plus $25 for a snap ring groove. Now I have to figure out if the Explorer or Mustang axle has the length and or the diameter needed to make this happen. I am sure the creative steel axles are worth the money but if you could do the conversion yourself for $1000 instead of $4500 that makes things more bearable. I could upgrade as needed at a later time.

I've been keeping my eye on Ebay for used 8.8" IRS diff housings, specifically the aluminum Cobra or Mark VIII ones. (Yes, I realize the Mark VIII is 28-spline, but I would be replacing the diff, anyway, so that doesn't matter to me.) Here's the search I've got saved - (cobra, mark, mk, viii) (diff, housing, carrier, differential, irs, center) -kit -toyota -supra -vw -jetta -skf. Obviously, if you don't care if you get aluminum or cast iron, then you can expand the "(cobra, mark, mk, viii)" to include "cougar, tbird, thunderbird,...". It doesn't appear that the cast iron ones are any cheaper, and I'd rather have the lighter aluminum for the same money.

The price range on the diffs is pretty amazing. I've seen used Mark VIII diffs as cheap as $125 (+ shipping, of course) and as high as $500 or $600 (for just the center section, not the entire rear end). The Cobra ones are generally more expensive. I was watching a Cobra one for only $150, but didn't ever actually put a bid in , and it didn't sell. I shot the seller a message asking if he was going to relist it and he responded with, "Nope, sold it to a buddy. He's going to put it in his CTS-V."

So if we get a 28 spline 8.8 we can use out stock cts-v 1/2 shafts?
