Default Need help Cam install

Im in the middle of a cam install and I removed the cam cover. How do i get the cam to spin freely? Do I have to remove the rockers or valve spring first?

Oh...got that out of the way. That cam is not going to spin freely until all of the rockers and push rods are removed! Other wise you are trying to operate the valve train which would not be easy. Especially when you rotate it enough for a valve to slap a piston, by then hopefully you did not break out a ratchet and begin to force it. Also, you will need some wooden dowels to hold the lifters up when you remove the cam. This is every where on the forum, but the easiest place to find this in on ls1howto.com

For your sake I hope you have a friend to help you put this all back together that knows a little more about motor! either that or you need to take your time and read up on the topic! Take it slow and check, then re-check your work!

Um yeah! You'll need to remove the rockers, push rods and also use a special tool (5/16 steel rod about 25 inches long) to insert into the two holes on the front of the motor at about 10 and 2 of the cam shaft. That will keep your lifters from disappearing. Good luck.

I'm already afraid for your cam install. I did mine with a much more experienced friend. Wouldn't really attempt this by myself the first time...and yeah, go to LS1HowTo and it should help you finish up without error.

You can bend/twist the condenser A LITTLE to get the cam out. My friend did it without breaking a line, but be careful.

My cam install was different, I had the heads off, But doing the cam then was just an easy bonus. the condenser will lower quite a bit and it isn't to hard to take out, just don't rush it.

Take the condensor out, imho not worth the risk scorning a cam journal when putting the new cam in.

Definitely remove the condenser. It's not worth possibly damaging the cam or the A/C lines. You can always get the A/C recharged later.

Was able to maneuver the condenser out of the way. 2 of the valve dropped in cylinder 1 while changing out the valvesprings, any tricks to get the valve back up? I tried using a pen magnet

compressed air with and adapter to the spark plug hole.

Take out all spark plugs, with the car in neutral, rotate the crank using a socket wrench on the crank bolt, a plastic straw in the spark plug hole will help you feel when the piston is at the top. Just hold onto the straw . Next put the car in 4th gear if you still have the rear tires on the ground. This will assist in keeping the motor from turning over if you happens to have too much air. Insert the air adapter into the plug hole, keep the psi between 40 and 50 if you have a regulator on your air compressor. Repeat for each cylinder. I like doing it this way just incase the air would fail the piston is at the top and the valve will only drop about a 1/4 inch rather than all the way down if the piston is at the bottom.

Ill take pics next time i work on it, basically what i did was move it down so the cam can slide over it. I also took out the front grill.
