Default Axle popped out, or is something broken?

Got on it kinda hard the other day and I feel something pop in the rear. CAr still had some drive but you could feel something back there skipping.
The diff casing is fine and I drained the fluid which looked fine with no bits on the magnet. I even stuck my finger through the drain hole and couldn't feel anything broken inside.
I know some people have had issues with an axle popping out after changing them but this is all stock.

So my question is, does it look like something broke or do I simply pop it back in. And I'm assuming that's the seal hanging off the diff. Does that pop back in or do I need a new one.

Thanks
Tony

The axle needs to come out to replace the seal. Not sure how it popped out since there is a lock ring. If you can afford to have your car down for a little while, order a new seal, pull and inspect the axle, and prepare for having to wait on getting a new one. Really you don't need a new axle so much as a new CV joint, but not sure how easy it is to get by itself.

pop=broke IMO

But why haven't you taken it out to check yet? I would like to see an inner stub broke. Seen a bunch of outers, but not an inner.

I don't mean any of that maliciously, but we all like carnage to some extent. I hope you get her back up and running quick! Plenty of used axels going around.

Didn't take it off cuz the socket for the axle nut is at work. I'll take pics tomorrow night.
I don't use the car to go to work, so no big deal with downtime till I can order what's needed.

So if the stub did snap, how would I pull out the little piece sticking out of the diff? I'll also look up some axle install instructions.

Thanks guys

I've seen several broken inner stubs. May not be as common, but it definitely happens.

Now that I look at the picture again, the CV joint is coming out crooked, so it's definitely broken. In order to get the broken piece out, you will have to remove the other axle and knock it out with a long screwdriver.

It is definitely broken. I've broke 10 that way. You are unlucky that it is broken in the middle of the splines. You'll have to knock it out from the other side and hope all the pieces come out. I've had to completely disassemble the diff once.

I just helped a guy somewhat rebuild his diff. Replaced drivers side clutch discs, thrust washer and had some machine work on the drivers side case cover. It didn't seem to bad. So if you need to disassemble it, shouldnt be too big of a task.

My name is Brian, too, so I'll assume you meant me.

Your input was helpful, thank you, but I meant 07CTS-V. He's broken everything. He broke, found a replacement and changed an axle while on vacation lol

Hope I'm not confusing real names with forum names

It wasn't a serious comment. I was just poking fun at the fact that both of our posts say essentially the same thing.

Doing that with the VDC poly driveshaft? Excited to hear results of so.

Quick Reply: Axle popped out, or is something broken?
