So recently I have been toying with the idea of getting another truck and trading in or selling the V.... I had gotten trade value offers from 10k-11k for my 06 with 96k miles. Today I spoke with a dealer in VA Beach that had a nice truck I was considering (was being the operative word) and had them give me a quote based on a large number of photos and details emailed to them. Just when I thought CarMax was impressively low, Checkered Flag Toyota came in at disrespectfully low.... just over $4000 based on their KBB car buying service quote and $5600 based on "local auctions and local demand". My first question was "did you forget to put the V?!?!" Even Kbb.com in ROUGH condition is over $6k. These offers were too sad not to share!

I got an online offer from Autotrader for $10,700. I actually might be selling it to an independent dealer tomorrow if they offer a little more. I'll let you know what they say.

These cars are at that point where their real value is diverging from the normal market. It always happens with enthusiast cars. Look for the V1 to stabilize around 14-18K and start to go up over the next couple of years.

When looking for a V1 a 2006 the KBB was $14k for one with 45k miles on it. It sold before I could buy it. My 2007 was the exact same but slightly more miles, KBB was somehow $19k. Rarer, more niche cars are difficult for dealers to price since they use databases and sales are relatively far and few between. $10-11k sounds pretty good for a trade in. Why not sell it privately for more?

It's a real PITA trying to sell a car when you've got the rest of life to deal with and people are flakes for the most part. Also, whatever you get for your trade you save in sales tax as they deduct the trade price from the sale price.

If you can find what you want privately then selling it on your own it the way to go. Sold my camaro and three hours later I drove home in the v. Will not work like that for most, your location plays a big part as well.

When I bought my caddy I sold my saabaru privately but the caddy dealer wrote it up as a 'courtesy trade'. Basically they gave me a trade-in at the price I sold it for and did the paperwork for both cars. I gave the saabaru buyer a $300 discount to meet me at the dealership on that specific day and saved around $800 in taxes over a stand-alone private sale. So I pretty much saved $500 and got the price I wanted out of the saabaru which would've probably been halved in a normal trade.

I was looking at trade for the tax break, I'm not in a huge hurry to find something new nor am I totally convinced that I am going to get rid of the V. I love the car but I find myself missing my trucks lately. Sports car market here is weird, I had my Camaro listed for months very reasonably prices with only a few hits and the dealership it ended up at after me had it on their lot for a good while too.

$6K difference between what the dealer offered me as a trade in vs what I sold it private party, '04V with 55K.

It may take a month or two, but I would definitely try to sell it privately.

In that instance, it's worth it.
