Default How to properly center the clamp in this

Ok, i am experimentin with a new idea. The bearin on our ds are good for a long time. The rubber part seems to be the point of failure, for me atleast. So voodoo had a great idea, which i am still waitin for to arrive in the mail.

So i found this clamp on carrier for vw, i cut the original bracket off and welded out bracket on it. Seein you shouldnt leave anything that coud melt on it i completely dismantled it and welded it in place.

No i got it where its straight on the x axis, but the y axis is 2-3mm off.

Any ideas?

Not true.. almost every single shaft that comes to our shop the bearing is ****. Very rarely do we get one in where the actual bearing is in good shape. Same is true for the VW, we support the touareg platform as well which is what that clamping piece is initially for. Guys on those forums also bitch about the bearings themselves going bad.

14000km is 9000miles... Majority of Vs have long since passed that.. I wouldn't consider that high mileage on a bearing.

We've service many many shafts that are under 80,000 miles with **** toasted bearings.. it's very rare for the bearing to be fine.

I get it voodoo, most ppl should consider bearin life before clampin it...

I have to wait till sunday before i see if your bearing shows up. If it is here yet...

Its an idea that could be a quick fix

I'd say that a bearing going bad will reduce the life of the rubber AND vice versa, so it makes sense practically to replace as a unit, even though they are distinct parts. Given that, I'm struggling to see the value in reinventing/improving what voodoo has already done. This, while cool, looks functionally the same as a higher durometer version of voodoo's solution. Am I missing something?

We made units from 80,70,60,50...30.. durometer poly. I ran a 60on my V. But test vehicles had vibes. Gotta keep in mind, there is less poly on the clamp unit so it can be stiffer with no ill effects. It's a great solution for someone's driveshaft that has failling rubber and an excellent health bearing. But you have to mod it to work.. AND the units from the guys who created them, I've seen the price over $350... So I don't see why you'd want to ride your bike across the country when you could fly.
