Default Differential girdle construction

SO... I got my differential in today. It is brand new, probably from a 2007 CTS (according to the auction I won.) and I got it for about $240 shipped to my door. I've taken it apart and it seems pretty straight forward to make a girdle. I'll also be comparing and weighing the cases and parts to see if there are significant differences in the webbing and thickness of the cases. Anyways, pics!

Yep. I made an offer for $200 on one, shipping was $40. Good to go

I figure if the case is the same as a 3g diff, I can swap my gears over for cheap ish.

I didnt realize how different the two cases were. The pictures are great! Makes it easy to see all the extra bracing in the casting. If this route is sucessful for you, let us know because there are plenty of these on ebay.

Bought my diff tonight. Paid 99 and 47 to ship. Has the 3:42 ratio in it that I plan on installing into my diff. As soon as I get it I'll start make some templets.

congrates.

Do you plan on using all the guts and the pinion from your V diff into that case ?

Or are you only useing that case for gridle measurments ?

keep us updated on the differances.

So any progress? What thickness metal are you using? I'm getting so antsy to start on this thing. I hope my diff gets here soon!

Sorry for the slow update, I've been really busy at work. I have the metal on order, I'm going to make templates with 1/16th and then probably use 1/4" for the final product. I'll have to get the car on a lift to see what kind of clearances I have with the subframe and other components.

So I've gone in another direction. I ordered one of these http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/...ver-p-180.html for the 8.8 sitting in my garage. I'm going to make the 8.8 fit. The stock diff just doesn't have the mounting surface to really give it any strength.

My plan for solving the wheel hop issue is to make a torque arm like this: Differential girdle construction-strange.jpg

and attach it to the body farther up the car. Hopefully it will go something like this

Differential girdle construction-full-panorama.jpg

With the red being the location of the torque brace and its mounting points to the diff's rear cover and front mounting ears, and the orange part being a beefed up area to put a bushing or heim joint to take the torque and transfer it to the body. I may also extend the orange part to where the carrier bearing is mounted. The cover comes in tomorrow I'll start working on it Saturday.

i admire your ingenuity, i cant wait to see this setup all buttoned up and put to use, killernoodle do you have a whole stock rear setup or do you have axles and bushings and what not ?

My rear is all stock for now. I want to beef it up before the engine gets built and the turbos are in, because obviously a built motor + boost + glass diff = car out of commission.

Bushings are all stock too, I was hoping that building a torque arm would mitigate the need to upgrade all the bushings in the subframe so I could keep some of the suppleness but reduce drivetrain lash from the subframe twisting under drivetrain torque. The video on youtube of the CTS-V wheelhop issue from under the car shows the subframe moving considerably on the bushings when torque is applied, then it starts hopping and the subframe bounces around. The torque arm would transfer the differential torque to the car's frame rather than the subframe.

I'll have driveshaftshop do the axles for me. Both axles will probably be the same length as the cts-v short axle and would just need the 31 spline cobra piece bolted on. Essentially they would be level 5 cobra axles from DSS.
