I'm sitting at my desk and not looking at my car so not sure how much my help will be. Can you spray it with some liquid wrench and then use a screwdrived as a lever to push it off?

You need to get a pry bar and smack it in between the two halves. It'll separate. Just don't tear that boot!

Here's my writeup with a good pic of what I think you are talking about.

Ok, Got it off. Now the tricky part.... Getting it back in when re-assembling? It wont slide all the way up in. I can only get it to about where the grove is (leaving about 1/4 inch of the rod still exposed). What have you all done?

I have a jack stand under the lower control arm, and am prying down on the upper with a crow bar. Still wont seat all the way in.

Same way I said to take it off.....pry bar in between so it will open up. Then jack up the knuckle until it seats. (if you are by yourself)

I haven't worked on the front suspension of the V, but generally to get the upper BJ seated I'll use the weight of the car by lowering it onto a jack stand.

Easiest way is to support the car on the frame and using a floor jack lift the suspension from the lower control arm... it will pop into place

Ahhh man.. Just want to say thanks to all those who have replied. Special thanks to lolly!

The problem with the wedge to get it back on, was being able to get the wedge back in there. I couldn't hammer in it in because their was nothing holding it in there. I was finally about to use the pry bar to get the shaft back in enough that I could finally get the wedge in (the wedge being a screw driver.) Finally got it buttoned back up.

I was going to just do this in my garage alone but decided while I could do it, I would just wait until Sunday and use my friends shop and his assistance. 2hrs and beers, vs. 4 hours and sweat. lol

I did how ever grease all of the bolts, and screws that way next time would be easier. You must admire a NE car that has rusted bolts.
