Cts diff in a cts-v?
Okay guys, I purchased my cts v with a clunky drivetrain. After replacing the mounts, my diff whine is aweful! I was considering going with a cts diff for the next 6 months or so. Heres why: Its much more college-budget-friendly, and it has a 3.42 diff. I would like to go with 3.42 gearing, and that would be a great (cheap) way to test it, given that the entire diff is the price of a damn set of 3.42 gears...let alone installation. The speedo would need recalibrated, and a used diablo could fix that; killing two birds with one stone... so to speak. What do you guys think?

Sounds like a lot of work and unnecessary money to do for 6 months. If you're on a college budget it would make more sense to do it right the first time. Save the money you'd put into that for what you really want to do for it.
If it was broken, that'd be a different story. But a little whine, while annoying, shouldn't hurt anything.
The cooler weather may help that whine out a little bit too.

if its whining bad then ur on borrowed time.. when mine started to howl i ordered a gen 4..i ordered it monday and the diff blew on thursday..friday morning my diff arrived and the car was up and going that night..i got lucky
but if u can get the cts diff cheap enough i dont see why it would hurt..i can have the diff out of the car in about an hr..

So, I wouldn't worry about your 07 making a slight whine.

I don't think you can, the sticker is on the passenger rear mounting "ear" and it will face the top of car. My previous owner told me the diff had been upgraded and I bought the car taking his word on that. I have since confirmed the diff is the newer version by removing the whole case, I had to remove it when I broke the axle off inside the diff.

Side Note: You will be creating more stress on your drivetrain by going to the 3.42. I'm not saying you will break anything, but as a driveline engineer for Jeep I couldn't put that low of a ratio in the wrangler's that had a 4.0L engine as we were twisting off output shafts of the transfer cases.

My diff is absolutely whining badly. at 45mph with the windows up, its damn near unbearable. I have to turn the radio up to max to drown it out. the reason I say approx 6 months, is because I graduate in may. I was more looking for a cheap band aid until im making more funds. A $200 cts diff is starting to look pretty good, over a $1000 4th gen V diff

07cts-v, I am a mechanical engineering student set to graduate in may. I know what you mean. I could probably figure out the additional stress, but I'm not sure its really an issue for temporary daily driving means......but hmm im kinda compelled to figure it out now! Lol. As for the speedo, im not really sure, unless its purely a function of trans rpm to wheel rpm. I'm thinking probably needs calibrates. Ps, wanna get me a job there? Haha

Is it the same exact diff assembly? It's not the pinion and gear i'm worried about, it's the casing/differential itself. Just because the GTO is a 3.42 ratio does not mean any of the same materials were used to build it, or the casing is the same.

Will the axles and driveshaft bolt up also? I couldn't imagine it being an exact match between the two...There is a lot to consider here and like the others said too...
Just save up and keep your eyes open for the proper replacement...sometimes what looks to be a $10 fix becomes $100 in no time, if you know what I mean...
