I had the same exhaust bolt sheared off when I went to install my headers. I ended up having to pull the head off to get it out. It gave me a good excuse to clean and freshen up the top end--new springs and a comp trunion upgrade.

Sounds like our cars are near the same stage. Luckily I've been able to park mine most of the time recently, so I keep some miles off of it. It's just shy of 120k right now. It also needs a new front bumper, the rear bumper needs to be repainted, and it needs shocks and tires.

I've actually been able to walk anywhere I need to go. The woman's car is always the last one in the driveway so we take that when we need to go somewhere further. I love not having to drive!

I decided to build some Subframe connectors for my car today.

Subframe Connectors we made for my 2005

Looking towards the front of the car at the back of the frame rails; paint removed for the TIG.

Mounting plate, showing holes drilled to install Aircraft nuts and awaiting a perimeter weld.

Showing aforementioned plate welded in place and tacked up connector bolted to welded plate.

Front cradle mount; tacked to existing washer, before we braced it.

Lower, Lower Control Arm mount; inside looking out

Installed:

It need the ends capped; we will cap one end and then fill the tube ith argon and weld the other end.

Main concern for me is the lower control arm nut can't fully thread on anymore.

Check out the new pics, those were just mock up.

Actually a good point about the trailing arm bolt. I would make this piece a weld on piece or attach it with bolts. production variation in the cradle could cause a gap here or at the cradle mount. if you allowed this to be welded on last it would solve that problem (or make it a bolted joint so it can be tweaked) I suppose purposely gaping the cradle mount and providing washers to shim for each application would work as well.

Huh?

It is welded to the brace and then attached with A bolt.

Please expound.

We'll see if I can explain it without a picture:
When you weld up your subframe connector, you weld the washer for the cradle mount, and the tab for the trailing arm bolt solid to the steel bar. This establishes a set distance between these two features.

This is ok when it is welded based on the car it is going on. But if I were to weld them in the same location on say 100 cars, I would see a distribution of this set distance based on the variation that goes into the manufacturing process of the car itself. Ideally the subframe connectors would allow for some adjustment during assembly to guarantee that both of those interfaces have tight joints once torqued down (no gaps).

This also avoids the opposite side where the bolts torque down to create a tight joint, but puts a lot of stress into this portion of the subframe connectors, which could lead to early failure.

This may or may not be an issue, without seeing the manufacturers drawings and how much variation the allow it is hard to say, but that cradle mount being rubber could allow more variation here than if it was all in the steel portion.

Gotcha.....the tolerances in the drilled holes in all mounting points, should be enough for this....

That is one aspect, but the vertical alignment will vary as well. (along the bolt axis)

Possibly; don't see it being an issue......but we will see for sure......nothing a torque wrench won;t fix....
