Gentlemen,

My dampner has started wobbling, time to replace. I don't want to replace with the stock unit, which is doomed to failure on almost all LS motors (V1, C5, GTO, TBSS, etc.). However, the most frequently recommended aftermarket replacement, which is the ATI Super Dampner, costs $450. Mother of God.

Is there anything cheaper out there you guys can recommend that runs better than the stock dampner?

For the installation, I know I'm going to need a new serpentine belt, and have decided to go with the Goodyear Gatorback:


I know I also need a crank bolt, and people have suggested the ARP because it's re-useable. Does anyone have a part number for it?

I ran an SLP on my notchback with no complaints. Powerbond makes it for SLP.

The only one other than the ones mentioned that I've heard of is the fluidampr. It runs about $465 though.

I'd probably just replace mine with an OEM part though... at $75 a piece, I could replace it 6 times before breaking even with one of the aftermarket units.

There's not much out there about the fluidrampr. I'd rather not go with something unknown.

I considered that, but every time I put my baby-carrying car on jackstands and take the daily driver out of commission for a project of unknown duration I've never tackled before, my wife puts another lawyer on retainer. She's hot, so I'd rather stay married.

Thanks. You guys run underdrives on these beasts? What percent UD- 10% or 25%? I'm worried about giving myself another problem.

I've seen some guys run a combination of 25% UD and 160 degree thermostat that seems pretty smart. Anybody doing that?

Fluidampr's are really good pieces. You see them alot on mid power level modded diesels ( 600-1000rwhp). If they do well with that sort of abuse the one's made for the LS6 must be fine. The main benefits of the Fluid Damper is the reduction in mechanicaly stress on the damper/motor, as well as the reduction in vibration.

Edit: when I had my 06 w/ the ls2 my original damper crapped out at 26K, my 04 still has the original and it works fine but an upgrade is on the todo list. I'm going either Fluiddampr or ATI

I was going to install one of these when I did my H/C combo, vut had to spend the coin on lifters and pushrods. I'll probably be doing this in the future.

Is anyone running lower T-stats? I thought the LSx engines ran more efficiently with stock T-Stats?


Also, on the balancer bolt. Just get another stock bolt, they are like $7. But get a longer bolt from Fastenal ($6) for pulling on the balancer. Its a M16 x 2.0 pitch x 120mm long. I used one and it was absolutely perfect.

Decided to go with the ATI, no underdrive. I want this part to work. Don't want to have to think about it again for another 10 years.

I was told the optimal temp is mimimum 180 range I chose to go with the 185 tstat and fans run at 195

I have to give a shout-out to Summit. Not sure if they are sponsors or not and if this is against the rules-- if so, sorry. But I just have to say that they worked super hard to get this part to me, and it just arrived today. Initially, they tried to do a drop pick up, so I could pick up the part from ATI, which is based in my town, Baltimore. That way I could get summit pricing and not pay any shipping. Then when it looked like ATI wouldn't fab it in time for a weekend install, which became clear at 2.50pm on Friday, they overnighted the part to me from their stock for what I thought was a very low overnight fee. Not only that, but they called me several times to confirm that everything was going smoothly. All in all, my "bright idea" to do a drop pick up from ATI probably cost them a couple hours in man time, and they were apologizing to me the whole time. Amazing.

The ATI damper is is sitting here in front of me now. Artie from Summit, you are the man.

I actually use a summit brand corvette damper and its been working flawlessly. I was going to go ATI but they had a delay in shipping so I went with the summit brand as I needed one ASAP. My stocker actually seperated and blew my belts, made a nice mess and chewed up my maf wiring. Could have been worse if it flew apart.

Summit is good about that sort of stuff. When my head studs got stolen by someone at UPS they overnighted me a new set right away, the only thing they wanted from me was to hold on to the box where the seals had been broken. Can't argue with that service.
