What's wrong with high point? They have lifetime warranties on their guns, they shoot when you need them to, and they shoot any shitty ammo loads i have ever found. I would buy one. My buddy has one in 9mm and whe shoot the hell out of that thing. Hi point is like the V6 muscle cars of the gun world. You still have a gun, it still works... It just doesn't look and perform quite like a $1500 custom 1911.

You probably have not ever even owned, held or shot one, just perpetuating the internet myths.
Yes, they are heavy and ugly, but I don't have little girl arms, so weight is not an issue for ME.
They shoot great and while all the morons get their $1600 cc Kimbers stolen from their vehicles; I am only ever out $150 dollars.
They are American made and will shoot ANY ammo.
With all of the great ARs out there; there is no reason to build one, unless you already own one. I am going to build me an AR pistol once prices come down. I would buy an off the shelf from a good name, so you have that warranty.
Building will not save you any money, at least right now it won't.
To answer your questions, I am not a gunsmith, but I am not a certified welder, SAE mechanic, etc...
I do know that fitting pieces together for ARs can be somewhat of a task if you don't know what you are doing.
Be careful.
Preach.(I wrote my response before I read your whole post. lol)

Yea I actually like hi point. Its not a bad gun at all. My carry gun is a H&K P2000 but that's what my agency issues so I don't have a choice. I would rather carry a 1911. But my gun is either on my hip or in a safe so I don't have to leave it in the car ever.
Edit: Here is my lonely ol lower waiting for parts for the upper... I have a magpul grip but at the time of assembly all I had was this standard m4 gril so in the intrest of finishing the guts of the lower I went ahead and assembled it with the stock grip for now
