I have considered a cheap winter beater, but once you add in the cost of the car, the cost of repairs likely on a beater, slightly extra insurance and yearly tabs, and having to deal with another vehicle clogging up the driveway, I would still lose money even when I was looking for one to average 30mpg. Not to mention I'd be driving a piece of crap Scion xb or something like that compared to my V with heated seats.

Necessity depends on your area. In Pittsburgh there's more snow and slush than ice usually. I park outside so when it's cold it stays frozen and when it's not, it gets rinsed. If you give it a good wax on top in the fall, and a good rinse underneath on a warm day or two during winter it's not gonna melt. It's really not.

Here where i live in Newfoundland, we have hard winters and we use a **** load of salt on the roads, no matter what color your car is at the end of the day driving after a snowstorm, your car will be white.. And we also have alot of slush, which kills and rusts cars here big time. Let's just say that a liquid wrench is our best friend here working in our local garages.. I will be putting my car away for the winter, no questions asked.
