Default Trans noise

Just picked up an 05 v1 yesterday. When the car is sitting in neutral it sounds normal but say if your sitting in first gear at a light with the clutch engaged it starts making almost the grinding/rattling type noise. After you release it and take off it go's away, sometimes you get it in between gears but it only seems to happen during gears 1-2-3, could be my driving style (with it making it between gears), I'll try and post a video later. No slippage in the clutch either.

Sounds to me like a throw out bearing.

Yup, almost every car I've owned has done this at some time. And the v is no exception, but it never had any performance effects. Wouldn't worry too much. But in fact it's a stock clutch then I would worry, dual mass flywheels have been known for all kinds of noises and feels and vibes. 99k is plenty for it to be the culprit. I had a noise similar to what you're describing and when I pulled the clutch the old throw out bearing was noisy. It also fits your description of when Trans is disengaged it's noisy, but not when engaged.

Mine was making noise in neutral...and just resting a foot on the clutch pedal would make it go away. Then I lost my shifting.
After pulling the trans the stock TOB feels shot and it will pop off of the slave pretty easily. Also my DMF feels very wobbly.
BTW, I'm at 102k,....good luck!

So what you guys suggest? LS7 clutch or something? I wanna keep this reasonable in price but don't want to waste the effort that's gonna be put into this.

It's gonna be my daily, the only mod's it has at the moment is muffler delete.

Also can tob cause a gear to grind when engaging?

Yup.

At 95k miles, that seems a bit early, but the previous owner(s) may have ridden with a foot on the clutch pedal too much causing it to wear prematurely.

I wouldn't omit another OEM clutch from your shopping list, but it depends on how you drive your car. The LS7 with a light-weight flywheel would be a nice upgrade as others have already suggested.

You can get everything from Luke at Lindsay Cadillac if you want 100% OEM. I went through a 3rd party reseller and it was a little cheaper, but I think they remove the serial numbers and stuff, hah.

OP - it could be the dual mass flywheel of your OEM clutch setup that's degrading and causing the symptoms you describe. I had that. Replaced with an LS7 setup and it's gone now. You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't educate yourself on the LS7 clutch swap before you go buying anything though. There have been plenty of us folks who've gone through all the trial and error in order to save you the hassles. While it's a great upgrade - and reasonable in terms of price - it does come with its fair share of possible complications, delays, and extra expenses (especially if you're having a shop do the install). There are also a couple very easy but very imperative install "tips" that really make a world of difference, IE: pressure plate bolt torque specs. Use the forums "search" function when you have a few hours to spare, and read some of the most recent threads. Unfortunately you'll have to sift through some BS in most of the threads, but there's usually a summary of the pertinent info somewhere near the end. Good luck!
