For future reference, you didn't have to do that. The CTS/CTS-V manual and all user-created guides dating back to 03-04 instruct you to remove the lower and then upper pieces of the plastic bezel to access the steering column.
They snap together. The trickiest part is knowing that there's an inverted Torx E5 or E7 (I forget--I'd have to check my notes) on the right side of the column needed to get the upper half off.

The trickiest part is remembering that there's an inverted Torx E5 or E7 (I forget, but my notes and pictures have the answer) located on the upper right side of the column that must be removed to get the upper clamshell half off.
