radar detectors in Ontario
Just wondering if anyone has one or has tried using a radar detector in Ontario. I know it's illegal, but do they work with what the cops use around here (laser)? Can they detect that you have one? BTW, I mean newer detectors like Valentine One or Escort.

I always have my radar on and has helped me put a lot when i come up to Canada.
the new radars have all the good stuff in them, and the cops won't know you have one unless he is hiding and you hit the brakes. radar detectors are worth every penny if used in the right way.

I have a Passport. when I mean in the right way, I mean that when your radar goes off don't slamm on the breaks, that is a dead give away. Most of the time if you just let off the gas you will be fine, since the radar will pick up the police before their radar can pick you up. The only radar that would screw you is the lazer, as soon as it hits you the cop has a reading. My radar has never picked up lazer in Canada, maybe im lucky.

Most cops use radar, K or Ka band. Lazer guns cost more and cops are cheap. If you want to get a radar detector and not worry about getting caught with it, get the passport that has a front mount and a rear mount on the car and just has a little box that you can put anywhere in your car. its also one of the best radar detectors on the market and is small so it is easy to hide.

Here in Calgary the city cops use lazer for speed traps and Ka in their cars(city/RCMP). Lazer is pretty shitty cause once they shoot, they have ya. In BC the RCMP pretty much use instant-on radar which is about as bad as lazer. It doesn't transmit continuously only when they push a button, no warning.

I got caught with it, and fought the charge. I won.
Most likely I will never run it again.

It is illegall to use in Ontario. The ticket is $170 cdn and they take away the detector. I personally carry a cheapo model as a decoy and use a Valentine 1 . If I get nailed with K or Ka, I'll slam on the brakes and take the $170 ticket and give them thwe cheapo. It's better then loosing the points and still paying the same amount for a speeding ticket.

Two years or so ago, I had a Cobra 6 band laser. Twice I was passed by a cop and the VG2 (laser detector-detector) didn't go off, and he whipped around and questioned me. They ended up saying "must have been the car beside you."
I tell you honestly, it NEVER saved my skin. Far too many K or X band false alarms from cellular phone towers, and when it did alert it seemed too late.
I had the unit hidden beside my rearview and wired into the map lights of my 94 Z28.
I DID get pulled over once (the unit wasn't even on), and the cop found it and charged me.
I went to court, questioned his inexperienced *** and won. He had to come back to my house and return it. That was hilarious for my dad to see...
Anyway, moral of the story, if you don't get a decent one that can detach and mount the sensor behind the bumpers and completely hide the unit, don't bother.

You need to talk to the radar detector manufacturer or a representative. Radar detectors need to be taylored to the area you live and drive in and detection devises, as well as radar detectors detection requirements have to be matched.
I bought a high end detector in Buffalo once a few years ago that didn't work in Ontario, that may have been your detectors problem Dr. Zed.
I phoned the 1-800- number that came with my detector and they told me that it was the wrong frequency and detector for Ontario and that if I'd talked to them first that they would have recommended a different detector.
Who knows maybe now they are more generalize systems that law enforcement is using but thats the way it worked out for me back then. I never bothered getting another one after that one was taken by the cops and I recieved my nice yellow ticket.

After years of being able to fool the old VG1 and VG2 RDD's radar detectors in Ontario are now being picked off at will by the OPP. Two years ago the Ontario Highway cops went to an Australian system called "Spectre" by Stalcar. In the past all the radar detector manufacturers did is change the frequency of their RDs to fool the VG1 and VG2. But Stalcar issues annual updates for the Spectre that adjust their RDD to the frequencies of the newer detectors.
Detector manufacturers are now looking for a more permanent solution to fooling the Spectre RDD. There have been detectors that have fooled the Spectre, but not for long.
My advice is to turn off your radar detector if you are in Ontario and put it away. You will get picked off by the OPP who generate big revenue from speeding tickets and jealously guard their turf. Sooner or later there will be a new radar detector that can beat the Spectre (apparently there is one on the way that emits no signal) but that's still a couple of years off.
I believe Texas and Virginia are using the Spectre also.
