I took my car out again and it ran another best time of 7.05 @96mph. BUT it hits 6,500 rpm and quits pulling after that. Its a lq9 6.0 with a cam and brian tooley valvesprings and pushrods. Everything else is stock. I currently have a 750 holley on it running a mix of 91 and 112 octane. My timing is set at 33 degrees from 2500 on. The guy who spec'd my cam for me said not to go over 33 degrees BUT when I first ran it at 31 degrees it would hit 6,000 and quit pulling, now that I bumped it up to 33 its a little better. Should I keep bumping it up and see what happens?? What's too many rpm's for these motors??

definitely try more timing. also, i don't think you need the race gas. sometimes that hurts more than helps. i have a good bit more compression and timing than you and i run straight 93

I know this is old but what engine combo are you running? just looking at different timing combos, I don't have any access to a dyno so just going in other peoples info!

hello guys its been a while but the engine swap is just about done. There wont be much time for a proper tune so i wanted to know what would be a good starting point for the initial set up on the MSD?

Here is the set up i'm running
LQ9 tore down and rebuilt
Holley Terminator TBI EFI
243 heads with a very light port
EPS Cam 226/230 111 +2
PAC 1904 Dual Springs
2600 12" converter

I'm set to transfer out to cali next month so i'll only have access to 91 octane gas.

I wouldnt go higher than 30° total at wide open throttle.

Got my LQ4 set for 28° at wide open throttle. MAP sensor adds 10° at idle and cruise only. I used to dabble with 32-36 but I saw the best gains when I dropped it to 28°.

Why do you have holley efi and MSD on it. The holley will run the coils and get rid of the MSD. The maps on the holley are way more adjustable.

Then you only have 1 box for everything

this holley efi will control timing on vehicles that have a computer controlled distributor.

Your holley terminator efi will do ALL ignition control. And do a far superior job than the msd.

Add the coil harnesses and wire the crank and cam sensors the change the tune. MSD is marginal at best. None of the pills are a good starting point IMO

guys this model of the terminator efi wont control the LS coils. I have part number 550-406 the one that you guys are referring to is 550-410. Later on i can get the harness and the hand held controller and do that.

Buy the harness, then use the same laptop that you need for the msd, and your golden

The ecu is the same as the HP. The hand held is a waist when you need to really tune the car.

yea i'm kinda pissed right now cause when i purchased my current efi system back in feb(before heading out on a 6 month deployment) the one that controls the timing wasnt out yet. It looks like holley released this "LS TBI EFI" system back in june

whats been done has been done i'll be upgrading the harness in the near futur in the mean time back to this MSD tuning

sorry didnt mean to get off topic.

i never posted my setup here and remember the "deer caught in the headlights" feeling when i first started tuning the MSD/CARB setup...

mine was a 11.4:1 compression LS2 with a 236/242 cam. vic jr. 10* at 0rpm ramped to 31* by 500 RPM and flatlined to redline.

I tried the map sensor and my combo just ran best at the straight 31* across the board so i left it the simple way.

This is all good reading. Still banging my head against the keyboard tho on this tuning for a turbo setup.
I think my problem is I may have too big of carb. Seems to run rich. 850 demon blow through on a stock 5.3 with a 69mm Turbo
What do you guys think? Was planning on getting a bigger cam in the near future with some head work done. Thats why i went with the 850.

Here is my current graph set up. the 5.3 seems to run a little rich still.
