1-wire alternators
Pretty much all of the posts I can find via searching on this topic say to just get your alternator hacked up and converted to a 1 wire (rather than messing w/ a resistor).
I'd rather avoid this - if my alt dies I just want to swap it and go, not buy another, get it hacked up, and then go (plus I don't like the thought of trusting somebody modifying an alternator since they can be a serious fire hazard if something goes wrong).
Are there any plug-and-play 1 wire solutions where i can just bolt it on, run 1 wire from the alt to the starter, and that's it?

Hooking up a voltage sense wire through the charge light that already exists on the dash of most old cars seems pretty simple to me. No resistor required if you do that. I know our carb'd vehicles don't draw as many amps as an EFI car, but still I like knowing the voltage regulator is keeping the proper voltage at the dash rather than just at the output lug of the alternator.
Plus if your alternator ever takes a dump driving across the great state of Nebraska, it is hard to imagine finding a replacement Powermaster alternator in the local tractor supply.
I mean really, just how much work is it to run the extra wire or two? Once it works you are good to go.

So can any type of 1-wire alternator be used if you build the right bracket for it?
For example, can I use this guy?

The reason I ask is because I've used that style of 1-wire alt for yeras with no problems, just never on a carb's LS before.

Is a resistor needed if you run a volt gauge?? Which terminal, on the alternator, is used for the gauge??

I had my voltage reg replaced by cape alternator and starter in Missouri. Sent it to them and had it back within the week. Only cost me $50. It's a true 1wire now and haven't had a problem since.

I'm thinkiing about the Tuff Stuff Performance 7127NF6G from Summit, or else a 87 Monte 4.3 TBI alternator (94 amp, w/AC!, $60), but both have different mounting. I'm doing a custom bracket anyhow. The TBI has the same 2 blade blug as my '78

Never had a ls alt converted over but I have had others converted in the past and have always had good results with them I will be having my ls1 alt converted over when I get my motor finished.

Yeah I was out looking at my 96 suburban, and even though there is a 4-wire plug, there's only one wire coming out. I figured since I have an example sitting in my driveway I'd just buy a 96 alternator. I know Napa has the pigtail. I think it would fit in the stock bracket too, but not totally sure
