5.3 cam choices
Im putting together a 5.3 carb set up for my truck,3.73 rear.th350 for now (5 speed later) 3800 stall tci 242200.706 heads mild port work,stock bottom end.truck weighs around 3400 lbs.single plane intake.1 7/8 long tubes.want a cam with a tight c/l ,most are around 114.really like to be around 110 or less ,with about 228-235 @50 duration,and between 570 and 590 lift.any ideas?i think ill have to go custom because everything seems to be for fi setups,i really want a cam thats engineered for a carb set up.

check out speed inc tu2 cam 114 lobe,.581 lift for turbo app but looks great for carbed setup,its the one i went with,within weeks of starting the engine so no power numbers yet,just 2 cents

Here is another choice to consider.
2002on22s:posted his cam choice in his carbed 5.3 truck.
This would be a strong runner on those EPS lobes.
He also sent me an PM that was a bit more detailed in the characteristics of the cam as installed in his 5.3.

Anything below 2200 I really couldn’t tell a whole lot of difference, well I could, but the point I was trying to make is I sure didn’t lose anything down low & that was important to me. That was all ran off the MSD box."

That Edelbrock 2216 cam sure is ground on some slow lobes. Would be likely be easy on parts, but a custom cam on faster lobes would/could/should definitely work better at all points.
Less seat timing, more torque, more power, better manners, easier to tune, idle, ect.
In the hypothetical example below, the EPS lobed cam would have 35° less overlap @.006 for the exact same events at .050!
An equivalent cam ground on the fast but stable EPS lobes would look like:
EPS .600/.603, 230/238 @.050, 279/287@.006 (adv) 110LSA/106ICL
Timing @.006"
Intake: 33.5°, 65.5°
Exhaust: 77.5°, 29.5°
Overlap: 63°
Timing at 0.050" Lift:
Intake: 9° , 41°
Exhaust: 53° ,5°
Overlap: 14°
Edelbrock #2216 cam:
.540/.540, 230/237 @.050, 314/322 @.006, 110°LSA/106°ICL
Timing at 0.006" Lift:
Intake: 51°, 83°
Exhaust: 95°, 47°
Overlap: 98 °

Exhaust: 52.5°, 4.5°
Overlap: 13.5°

Is he sayin he had success running that cam on eps lobes with stock springs and retainers? I thought they were hard on valve train parts.with the 3.73 and the loose converter on 28 inch tires it'll come in fast.you think I'd be better with 4.11s? Damn this truck was supposed to be a dd if I wanted but I can't help but try to make it as quick as I can.might have to put a quick change rear in it lol.

called herbert cams today....guy said he didnt know anything about ls engines,tried to get him to send me a cam card on the cam i was interested in,"we dont have any,we get those made somewhere in california".sux because ive used there solid rollers in some of my bbc and sbc drag motors and they worked great.

With that converter and rear years you shouldn't have a problem with any cam with a 3000+ operating range...def stick with a low lsa...Edelbrock looks like a great choice based on the fact it was engineered along with the intake and similar msd controller...when I get a cam fOr my carbed 5.3 I'm going eddy even though I usually don't buy their products

I put a TR224 cam in a carbed 5.3 S10 with a 5 speed, IMO it ran great, had over 400hp flywheel easy and great on gas too. I believe it was on a 110-112 max LSA. When you go 5 speed IMO your whole cam recommendation wil change. Your timing curve needs will. It pulled hard all the way through the powerband to 6500. The Thunder cam, Comp cam 918's and 7.4 pushrods were all bought here in the LS1 classifieds.
