I'm in to see some carb'd 5.3 dyno numbers as well! If you got'em let see them!

My Nova is under the knife right now for power steering, front disc and maybe some rear end upgrades, but I have found a shop not to far that has pretty fair prices on dyno time. I'm HOPING to get my all stock 5.3 w/Demon 750DP on the rollers as a baseline for future upgrades.

I will say, it should be the same as all the other 5.3s out there depending on the mods.

Here is my setup! No dyno numbers but 1/4 mile passes! I was told the motor was a low mileage motor with a small comp cam! Well that wasn't true at all! It spun a bearing on the 11th 1/4 miles pass so I am building a new motor! Not sure what yet!
Car ran the best of 12.45@110.76! Still had more in it before it went!

89 ford mustang coupe
08 5.3 flatop pistons
241 heads with trickflow springs 9.093:1 compression
Stock 1721 cam! Which can in the 02 Vette and other vehicles
Victor Jr intake
Holley 750 with 73/80 jets 35 squiters (was still tuning on carb)
Dyntech longtubes
3.73 gears
Msd 6012 map zero out timing on 38 at 1200rpm all the across
Race weight not real sure but I would have to guess around 3100

It like 6000 the best! I tried it from 5800 to 6500! Ran it's best pass and mph at 6000! Anything over 6000 it wouldn't change much so no need to turn it up!

Nice BIGCOUNTRY sounds similar to the setup I'm gonna run in my s10 5.3 with 241 heads and small cam.

Your post has me itching to get my fox coupe going.

I have the same combination as you except for an aluminum block, a lot more cam and a little bit less carb and intake.

How did you arrive at the 9.093-1 c/r figure?

Default As Promised!

My local performance shop held a $50 DYNO DAY on March 29th and I busted butt to finish the quick ratio PS conversion and a front disc brake upgrade and got some time on the rollers!

Quick review or specs:
-2001 5.3 with 106K, now 109K’ish
-Completely stock internals
-Edelbrock dual plane
-Used/rebuild Speed Demon 750
-Ebay 3rd gen SS headers, 1 ¾” Primary, 3” collectors
-3” straight pipes to Thrust mufflers dumped at the axle
-Rebuilt TH350
-2000RPM converter
-Original 2.73 gears

For a stock cam: the torque was what I expected, but about 400RPM lower than I expected to see it. The horsepower however was about 40HP less than I expected, and 1100RPM lower then what a 5.3 SHOULD reach peak at?1 WTF! I know I am leaving some on the table in carb and ignition tuning, but this was still a little disappointing.

Now don’t worry, I am no Dyno queen, I know a dyno is best used as a before/after tool and that kicking asphalt is what is REALLY important. As a baseline I am happy with how it performs on the road and on the track. I am going to be creating a thread in the Dyno section to share and discuss the results.

I haven't had mine on the rollers yet but what I have done is been doing some pretty in depth ign timing and carb tuning with my new wideband.

Take it from me. If you're just guessing or sniffing at AF ratio and timing you're leaving a BUNCH of ponies on the table!

cruizin73, did you spend some time changing timing/jetting to make the best of what you have?
as far as the peak #'s and the rpm, dont worry about it, run it and see where it likes to be shifted. I personally dont like chassis dyno's because there are too many variables effecting theese things, and the results can be skewed.
I think your combo will run very well. I'll bet some 3.73 gears are on your mind too, lol

3pedal, No I did not have any time to address ignition or carb tuning before the dyno. Finishing the quick ratio PS and disc brake conversions was full of potholes and hurdles!

I am sure there is a lot left on the table with the rough tunes I am currently running. I am tearing into the MSD timing and carb tune database stickies for some insight.

I actually just bought a set of low mile Richmond 3.23s, but I'm starting to think I should keep hunting for some 3.41 or 3.73s. But I do not want to sacrifice street and highway cruise for the few times I get on a strip. Remember, I only have 3 gears in my trans!!

What is your timing at, 73cruisen? Im sure there is some carb tuning to do also, but, if you are running your timing high for what GM set theirs at from the factory, that would most likely be your low peak answer. If you advance your timing, it brings every thing in earlier. Im sure that if you retarded your timing, the peaks would come in at a higher RPM. The jury is still out on whether it would make more power with the timing retarded, but common sense says it would. The accepted formula for making more power is to push the TQ peak to a higher RPM. The trade off would be less pep at lower RPMs. It may be that carbed intakes force us to run more timing to make power. I know that the carbed guys run way more timing than the EFI guys do. Im studying the whole timing deal and the reason for so much difference in the timing from us to the plastic intake guys, but I haven't come up with much yet. Still looking though!

Newschool. investigating and improving my carb and timing tunes are the order of business for the next several weeks. I set my timing curve so long ago I can not remeber what it is! But I bought the serial-USB cable last night and I am going to take a peak tonight. I just went thru the timing sticky and learned a lot. Including that i need to add a MAP sensor for to maximize ignition tuning. I saw your post in there about retarding at max RPM to help maintain piston speed. I will def play with that once I get a good baseline down.

It isnt the intake, it is the way a carbourator atomizes the fuel compared to EFI, which requires a carb combo to need a bit more timing.

My opinion is to add a degree or 2 beyond peak tq rpm. You need to accurately know where that is to make this work.
