Default Carbed LY6 cam selection

I have a junkyard LY6 with a GMPP single plane and Holley 850 dp, LS7 lifters, comp 7.400" cm pushrods, vvt elim., 1 7/8 primary headers. I am waiting until after I get a cam to order a torque conveter. I want a radical street/ mostly strip car and shift at 7000. Turbo 400, 4.10s and 28" tires are the rest of the equation. I was just looking for cam and spring suggestions. I was trying to avoid flycutting if possible. I was looking at the EPS single plane or the lunati 286/294 carb cam. I imagine these will be tight on PTV but kind of what I'm looking for. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Best bet is to get a custom cam made to your specific specs.

Do it once and do it right!

I have a similar setup in my 81 malibu lq4 with ls3 heads milled .030 with a Victor jr intake. I called martin at tick perf and got a custom grind from him but I did choose to flycut pistons. He was great to deal with and very helpful. My car weighs 3460 with me in it and has been 6.88 in the 1/8th so far ok only had it out 2 times and that was with a 3500 converter needs a 5000+

My car is very similar to yours. LY6 with a Vic Jr, Pro Systems 950, TH400, 4.11's and 28 inch tires, 3500ish race weight. I run a custom ground Comp 231/239 .598/.610 110+1. No flycutting required. Times with my 8 inch 5000 stall PTC are in my sig. I'm in the process of switching to a tighter converter this year to optimize nitrous passes.

Thanks for the replies. I have already sent emails to Martin at Tick and one to comp cams about a custom cam. I haven't heard anything yet but it is the weekend.

If you dont want to flycut, you are limited by piston-to-valve clearance. Neither of the two cams that you mention will fit.

My favorite grind for the street-strip no-fly-cut square port engines with a single plane manifold and carburetor is this Cam Motion grind:

XA228/370-XA242/355-11+3

It is 228/242 .629"/.604" on a 111 lobe center angle with 3 degrees of advance. It will work with a 3500 through 4500 converter and pull hard to 7000 RPM. It is like a square port hydraulic version of what I run in my car.

Thanks. I will look into that one.

It is not on their website. If you want it, call Cam Motion and ask for Danny. Let him know I told you about it.

Ed Curtis Spec'd my cam. It runs perfect. Hes done my last 3 cams, and I have sold many others with the way my car performs.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I ended up having Danny at Cam Motion grind me a cam. Very happy with everything, just can't wait to get this engine together and finish the rest of my build.

Not to hijack the thread, but I have been contemplating a 6.0 LY6 for my 68 chevelle project. Besides the cam and spring changes, are there any other valvetrain upgrades/ changes to consider (pushrods, rocker arms). I've been lurking around here for a while and I'm 80% sure an LS will be my next engine project. I like the idea of a salvage yard engine with a carb set up and cam change

you may have to get different pushrods. depends on cam and if you have heads milled . you might consider a trunion upgrade for stock rocker arms. you could get all the things you need in a package deal usually.
