Carb LSX in a 01 Ram 1500
Hey guys, I have a 2001 Ram 1500 2WD rcsb, lowered, pretty sharp but has a wimpy 3.9 V6. I'm looking to change that.. But I dont know beans about LS engines. I know older Chevy small blocks. I'd like for you guys to help me out on choosing whats best. It would be a daily driver, carb engine, nice torque, nice thumping cam, 375-400hp would be fine, maybe a 150 shot later on, and a 700R4 trans. What would YOU build? 5.3 or 6.0? I have a budget of about $4k which will be from start to finish. ( engine, trans, exhaust, fuel system, gauges, etc) Friend told me to get 243 heads.. are they a 58cc chamber for good compression? I know I will need motor mounts, and find the correct oil pan, what converter will I need? thanks for your time and input

a 6.0 would put you close to your goals with just a carb swap and headers. A 5.3 would need a cam too. 4 gand will be cutting it close if you ask me. To do it right the nickel and dime stuff will add up real quick.
Personally I think I would keep it EFI with a 4l80e. A carb with a 700r4 doesn't belong in that truck IMO.

5.3 in my truck, 3.42 gears (one had 3.73's) and weighed 5000 plus (both trucks) bone stock have/had 300+ hp and moved just fine.
If you did a cam swap and bumped up the comp some....400hp should be easy.
Now, as the $4000 budget....
A 5.3 would be cheaper to start with than a 6.0.
