Default El Camino LS2 / T56 Build Options

1980 El Camino, Tremec Magnum 6 speed (T56), Strange S60 rearend with 3.55 gears, will be using Holley LS conversion parts, AED 750 carb, SmartSpark ignition. Goals: fun street car, handles well, daily driveable.

I bought an LS2 package that included a rebuilt short block, 853 heads that need to be rebuilt and a GMPP single plane intake. Considering:

Option 1:
  • CNC LS6 heads
  • LS2 stock cam or carbureted grind camshaft to be determined, smooth idle
  • GMPP single plane intake
Option 2:
  • New LS3 heads - concerned about piston to valve clearance and intake valve shrouding
  • Carbureted grind camshaft to be determined, smooth idle
  • Edelbrock dual plane LS3 intake
- Which option would you choose and why?
- What cam could meet my goals of a smooth idle that will work well with a carburetor?
- Other thoughts?

I appreciate your input. Chris
