Default Very basic questions about 2002 Camaro's

My father and I are looking for a new project vehicle. I am 33 and he is nearing retirement in a few years. He has been pushing around the idea of building an LSX and he wants my assistance in picking a vehicle. He is thinking 500 hp and I can probably talk him into 600 hp pretty easily. Right now we are looking for some information on the late 4th generation Camaro.

How well does the stock rearend hold up? How well will it hold up to 500 hp? What is the most common upgrade for this issue?

How well does the automatic perform and at what horsepower does it need upgraded?

I want to show you a couple pictures of a past project of his. Not looking for praise or anything, I just want to show you his level of play.

This is a GTA that my father bought from a friend. It was already tubbed and he built a 502 with Lingenfelter heads for it. If I remember right, it had a T-400 with a Gear Venders overdrive unit under it.

This picture is without an engine in it.

Here is the 502 (brand new at the time).

We have a lot more questions but this is my first so I thought I'd see how this one goes before getting too detailed.

The stock rear has problems handling the factory horse power. You will want to upgrade to a 12 bolt or 9 inch.

As for the transmission, I'm not much familiar with the automatics, but it's just the electronic version of the same transmission found in your GTA.

welcome man..glad to see you made it over here. The rears in these cars wont hold 500 hp especially if you are gonna run a sticky tire. A 9 inch or 12 bolt tends to be the most common replacement. As for the trannys they seem to do ok but alot of people i know have swapped theirs out for th400's or something similar.

IF you are going with bigger tires in the rear and any kind of real power like that then the rear end has to go. As for the automatic, ive heard they do alright but for that amount of power then it is going to have to be changed to something like a T400 or something that will hold. Also the aluminum driveshaft will have to go...lol
